San Francisco Museum of Modern Art: 2010 SECA Art Award Exhibition; Fifty Years of Bay Area Art.
SECA artists: Mauricio Ancalmo, Colter Jacobsen, Ruth Laskey, Kamau Amu Patton.
Comment by AB: I gotta go with Kamau Amu Patton out of this foursome for his conceptual representations of sound, light, matter and how they interplay, intersect and interact. They're clean, competent and provocative, particularly two large linear visualizations of sound interference... or maybe dissonance (pardon my swiss cheese memory). They look great from afar and equally sweet up close. His delicate painted LED strips and solid graphite compositions gratify as well. Plus minimalist floor pieces. Plus he's got breadth. It's all good here.
Colter Jacobsen's detailed drawings and mixed media works, often on antique papers, recall 19th century romance and grandeur. An artful abstract photograph & drawing combination, and a strange disco-ball snail complete with glistening slime trail round his contribution out.
In the darkened parlor, Mauricio Ancalmo's kinetic video and sound installation featuring a whirling dervish vintage film projector will likely shim your brain a bit off kilter, while Ruth Laskey's intricate geometric weavings are worth straining your eyes over.
The accompanying Fifty Years of Bay Area Art exhibition is rather overwhelming, a perfect fit for that infinitesimal percentage of consecrated insider aficionados fully on top of their games. As for the rest of us dabblers, I suppose we can pick and choose favorites according to our skill levels.
