Cain Schulte Gallery: Magna Carta - Art on Paper.

Artists: Tor Archer, Matteo Bergamasco, Brad Brown, Miri Chais, Max Diel, Mark Fox, Daniele Girardi, Veronike Hinsberg, Diane Jacobs, Linda Karshan, Ruven Kuperman, Juliane Laitzsch, Joan Linder, Werner Linster, Will Marino, Justin Quinn, Susanne Ring, Ben Sleeuwenhoek, Ann Weber, and Chuck Webster.

Comment by AB: Works on paper by twenty artists-- emerging to established. According to the doctrine, matters addressed range from "Abu Ghraib torture atrocities and Japanese bondage techniques, to the resilience of religious dogmas and the visual codification of legal systems in medieval textile patterns." I suspect that pretty much covers it.

Andrea Schwartz Gallery: Cara Barer & Emilio Lobato.

Review by RWM: Irreverent relationships with the book and text on display. However, one may find beauty beyond the literary with book pages resembling plant growth, and text looking ancient among modern abstract schemes. Perhaps one can see here a movement away from the specialness one associates with books-- these post-text images by artists who demonstrate novel ways to make their points. The artists may see the limitations of the written word, here choosing self-expression over examination. Is this a condemnation or a celebration? Probably the former for those who have been published, but art critics will likely favor the latter, depending on the tome. There is beauty in the images and merit in these creative decisions nonetheless.

Comment by AB: Good show; worth a visit.
