Steven Wolf Fine Arts: Chris Sollars - The Swimmer.
Review by Anneliese Vobis: Sollars' sculptural practice overlaps with photography, video, collage and installation work. The Swimmer reflects on journeys and investigations along the Pacific coast. Story telling and altered sculptural objects constrast clean, geometrical driven video work. Both directions melt together and weave a narrative in Robert Smithson style.
Comment by AB: This one has several threads-- all good. In the rear gallery is a rollicking contemporary urban-set update of John Cheever's short story, The Swimmer (and the movie of the same name starring Burt Lancaster). Also on the docket is a slick selection of sea-salvage sculptures including a renovated barnacle encrusted bike frame, an archaeologic urban coastline survey in both video and photography, and to top it all off, an elongated cartographic excerpt of the California coast meticulously mounted on a strip of blue painters tape. Worth a visit!
