George Lawson Gallery, Sutter Street: Alma Chaney - New Paintings.
Comment by AB: Shades of manipulated yellow and beige layered and subtly textured onto panels comprise the abstractions of Alma Chaney, but if you look real close, you'll see that the compositions are crosshatched as well, like finely worked areas of shading that you might see in etchings. For those of you keeping score at home, this is the final show at the Sutter Street gallery (closing November 9). George Lawson Gallery on Potrero Ave. will be where it's happening from this point forward.

Ever Gold Gallery: Jocko Weyland - Crackle, Hiss, and Scrawl... Cassette Tapes, their Wrappings and Listings, 1980-2005.
Comment by AB: Counterculture chronicler Jocko Weyland exhibits an impressive archive of playlists, mostly handwritten, that correspond to period tape recordings of record albums, the whole shootin' match dating from circa 1980-2005. Interspersed among the lists are various paper ephemera like gallery invitations, illustrations, writings and sundry fliers that correspond to the times. A boombox against the rear wall of the gallery plays a continuous stream of relevant selections. As for the art part, Weyland will scan, enlarge and reproduce any piece or pieces in the show as limited edition prints.

Incline Gallery: SPACE - 1999.
Artists: Randy Colosky, Chris Fraser, Sandra Ono, Dean Smith.
Comment by AB: This is a perfect example of a show themed on an arcane antecedent, a science fiction program that basically went nowhere circa 1999, a reference that probably one in 100 at best even get. But the show deals with much larger issues. So forget the obscurities and cut to the big stuff like, for example, "the desire to make sense of the unexplainable universe." Now that's a modus anyone can identify with.
