Rena Bransten Gallery: Vik Muniz - Pictures of Magazines 2.
Comment by AB: You wouldn't think that greatly enlarged photographs of smallish collages would be anything to write home about, but these by Vik Muniz are. What Muniz does is recreate famous historical paintings from torn paper fragments of magazine illustrations using them almost like a painter would use individual brushstrokes, and in so doing, "repaints" these masterworks from scratch-- complete with textural subtleties. He then layers in even more subtleties by his selection, subject matters and positioning of these illustrated chards. For those of you keeping score at home, Muniz already has a catalogue raisonne (a book that inventories his complete works from 1987-2009). Impressive. Good show; stop on by.
