Ever Gold Gallery: Mark Benson - Get the Flu.

Comment by AB: This one may be a first for artland-- a show that makes an earnest effort to induce illness in all who attend. The first room of the gallery is filled with fans and air conditioners in order to maintain a cooler than normal temperature; the second room is filled with heaters in order to maintain a higher than normal temperature. The aesthetics are rudimentary at best, the rooms separated by heavy clear plastic dividers of the kind sometimes used in grocery stores to keep refrigerated areas cold. To top it all off, a handful of folksy appropriately themed textural artworks hang on the walls.

Now if you ascribe to the theory that rapid temperature changes can cause colds or other illnesses, then Ever Gold is the perfect venue in which to contract something. However, medical sources agree that rapid temperature change does not in and of itself cause illness, and in the case of the flu, viruses do. But if you want to be absolutely sure you're protected either way, limited edition flu shots are available this evening at the rear of the gallery for $50 each, administered by nurses from the Adult Immunization Travel Clinic (AITC) of the San Francisco Department of Public Health, including a signed numbered certificate courtesy of the artist.

The verdict? I like it.
