Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts: Carlos Villa Exhibition - Manongs, Some Doors, and a Bouquet of Crates.
Comment by AB: A major retrospective of the art of Carlos Villa surveys his work from 1970 to the present. The walls and floor of the main gallery are crammed mainly with large finely crafted folding wooden pieces that open and close much like oversized portfolios, with linear minimalist abstractions painted, drawn or built on their insides. In the side gallery are photographs of some of Villa's earlier installations along with a selection of similarly linear works on paper. This show's a real surprise and definitely worth a visit. Everything's so exceptionally well made... and y'all know what pushover I am when it comes to quality.
Through it all, I can't help but wonder why I've never seen any of these artworks on display at galleries. I'm sure there's a good reason, but not to worry. He's a fulltime professor at the San Francisco Art Institute so he likely doesn't have to sell anything anyway. Regardless of whatever, I'm slappin' a mid-month Pick on this baby.
