Gallery Paule Anglim: Deborah Butterfield.
Comment by AB: I don't have to tell you what a Deborah Butterfield exhibition consists of-- sculptures of horses fashioned in bronze, found metal and copper. And I don't have to tell you they're really superbly executed. But I just did. So there. Priced $85K-$130K.
For those of you playing the home version, an outdoor display of four larger-than-life sculptures is showing concurrently in the courtyard at 425 Market Street.

StumbleUpon Offices: Derek Weisberg & Narangkar Glover.
Comment by AB: Christine of StumbleUpon, a website based here in downtown SF, tells me she'll be curating a series of art shows at their 2-floor headquarters, and here's the good news-- she's looking for artists. And she's doing it because art enhances the atmospherics of their workplace. This month's fare proffers paintings in the Bay Area Figurative tradition by Narangkar Glover complemented by the dolorously endearing ceramic animates of Derek Weisberg.

Hespe Gallery: Kevin Moore, Rachel Gillen and Amberlee Rosolowich - Student/Teacher.
Comment by AB: Kevin Moore's the teacher (at Academy of Art University) and Rachel Gillen and Amberlee Rosolowich are two of his most promising students. Put 'em together and you have this show, anchored with two imposing full-length boxer portraits by Moore.

SFMOMA Artists Gallery: Pipeline - Art, Surfing, and the Ocean Environment.
Artists: Doug Acton, Anthony Bacigalupo, Jo Ann Biagini, Leo Bersamina, Charlie Callahan, George Corzine, Peter Shepard Cole, Keone Downing, Jessica Dunne, Jack Y. Ford Collection, Colin Gift, Terry Hoff, Dale Hope/Kahala, Max Lawrence, Ian MacLean, Reuben Margolin, Serena Mitnik-Miller, Linny Morris, Adrienne Keahi Pao, Christophe Piallat, Frank Quirarte, Don Ross, and Charles Valoroso.
Comment by AB, images c/o Marian Ferrara: According to the prefatory, Pipeline: Art, Surfing, and the Ocean Environment "examines the influence of surf culture on Bay Area artists and will feature paintings, sculptures, photographs, installations, film, and mixed media works alongside custom surfboards by Jeff Clark, one of the most noteworthy big wave surfers." I can't make the opening, unfortunately, but I hear it's packed and the band was excellent, playing classic surfing standards.

ArtHaus Gallery: Andrea Arroyo - Temptation.
Comment by AB: Andrea Arroyo, born in Mexico and currently residing in New York City, imbues her tender sensitive subject matters with pulsating colorific brilliance. I overhear Arroyo mentioning that one way she acheives her effects is by mixing paints with fine grain sand. Her compositions may appear facile at a glance, but when you zoom on in, you discover that they're exceptionally well executed. Like 'em.

Jancar Jones at No.: Nothing.
Artists: Julie Cloutier & Claire Nereim, Pablo Guardiola, Michael Guidetti, Chadwick Rantanen, Sean Talley.
Comment by AB: Well, this is supposed to be Nothing, but it's definitely something. In fact it's so something, the gallery is crammed to a level of density where you can barely move without crinkling your doppleganger. It's possible to access the art that's interspersed among the throngs-- hanging, leaning, setting on the floor, and playing on video in the back room, but you gotta really want it. Priced $200-$2000. And a fine time was had by all. (Open on weekends and by appointment.)

Rare Device: Buddy System - A Project of Little Paper Planes.
Artists: Aline Cautis, Caitlin Gallupe, Clare Grill, Matt Momchilov, Bridget Moser, Nathaniel Russell, David Wilson, Jess Wheaton. Curated by Kelly Lynn Jones of Little Paper Planes.
Comment by AB: According to the official rules, curator Kelly Lynn Jones chooses four artists and that's it for her. She's done. Each of the four artists she chose then chooses another artist, making a grand total of eight for the show-- and a "buddy system" of sorts. Together these buddies craft a show, and that's the complete unexpurgated essence of it all.
