Haines Gallery: Living History - Allison Smith.
Comment by AB: History meets art in Allison Smith's print and installation exhibition, with particular focus on Colonial-era textiles. Presenting various Early American scenarios within the context of a gallery-- as photographic prints on linen and fabric covered tilt-top tables-- prompts conversations that would likely not otherwise take place outside of strictly academic or classroom settings.

Museum of the African Diaspora: J.D. 'Okhai Ojeikere - Sartorial Moments and the Nearness of Yesterday; Gordon Parks - Photographs at his Centennial.
Comment by AB: In the main exhibition hall on the third floor, see a fascinating survey of Nigerian fashion and hairstyles, from traditional to modern, in photography by J.D. 'Okhai Ojeikere dating from 1955 to 2008. On the second floor, a selection of photographs by noted Life Magazine and documentary photographer Gordon Parks is on display, celebrating the centennial anniversary of his birth. Go see.

Eleanor Harwood Gallery: split focus - Renée Gertler, Matt Gil, Paul Wackers.
Comment by AB: Matt Gil's sculptures seem inspired by freeform design elements of the mid-20th century. Renée Gertler's polychrome linear compositions are rudimentary representations of more complex processes. She also presents a line of plain paper bags, each containing it's own mini-cosmos. Paul Wackers shelf paintings are basically sculptures in two dimensions, but he throws some three-dimensional works just to make it official.

Creativity Explored: Introductions.
Artists: Kate Thompson, Marcus McClure, Steven Liu, Keenan Dietiker.
Comment by AB: Creativity Explored introduces the art of four of their younger artists, all in their 20s. Kate Thompson's composite gatherings of people are noteworthy for me.

Gauntlet Gallery: Side Effects; Human Nature - Alexander Getty.
Artists from Side Effects: Drew Young, Jen Mann, Marcos LaFarga, and William Arvin.
Comment by AB: What do you get when you combine Ritalin with photography? Four artistic interpretations of the resultant freneticism in paintings on display in the front gallery. At least I think that's what the deal is. In the rear gallery, Alexander Getty photographs landscapes in the immediate vicinity of 101 and I-5 freeway exits between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
