Comment by AB: The super packed opening night gala at Art Market San Francisco features tons of exemplary art from over 70 top national and international galleries. There's boatloads to see and buy for collectors of every ilk, from representational, abstract and urban art to conceptual, regional and folk. Exhibitors mercifully spare us the typical deluge of "Art Fair Art," aka art that may fascinate and amaze in the instant, but proceeds to fizzle fast in terms of depth or significance, falling more into the realm of decorative schlock than anything else. Instead, galleries opt to display good solid quality work by accomplished artists from across the country, California in particular, including a respectable international representation as well. Few fast fizzlers here, and thankfully not the same old laundry list of names you see at practically every major art fair on the planet.
In related news, we San Franciscans must always remember that if we expect to have exemplary annual art fairs like this, we have to patronize the participating galleries and BUY ART. This is not a museum, it's not a diversion, it's not how we amuse ourselves before dinner. It's serious art that galleries bring to us, often from many thousands of miles away, because they deeply believe that it's substantive, significant and worthy of consideration and inclusion in the best of collections. So let's whip out the checkbooks and keep San Francisco on the national and international art world radar. Capiche?
