ArtZone 461 Gallery: Around Us - Jeong Im Yi; Panta rhei, everything flows - Eileen Starr Moderbacher.
Review by RWM: Interesting still lifes from Jeong Im Yi whose realistic work also serves as presentations of symbols and maybe archetypes. Impressive representations and great outdoor stuff. Nice to see the wildness.
Eileen Starr Moderbacher has great color scapes with symbols and maybe archetypes as well. Soothing colors and interesting movement. Nice blend of abstraction and color play.
Comment by AB: Cloudscapes, a single tree on a hill, passing scenery, and a still-life of pencils are among the eclectic array of subjects favored by Jeong Im Yi-- all capably painted. So here's a riddle for you... What do you get when you combine the Tropics, the Polar regions and the Pony Express? You guessed it-- the art of Eileen Starr Moderbacher.

Guerrero Gallery: Alex Lukas & Richard Colman - Miles from Home.
Comment by AB: Alex Lukas continues his time travels into the future, returning with visions that ain't particularly pretty, but at the same time I don't think anyone will dispute them. In the rear gallery, Richard Coleman conjures up a deviate blend of life, death, contortion, erotica and animals. Worth seeing.

White Walls / Shooting Gallery: Control - Nick Flatt; Toy Box - Robert Xavier Burden; Tame Nor Sane - Van Arno; Before the Sun Dies, Part II, Kingdom of Night - C3. Check it out.
Comment by AB: Four shows opening simultaneously-- that seems to be the new normal at the White Walls/Shooting Gallery megaplex where opening events have been ratcheted up to the point where they're now more in the realm of spectacles. This time around, it's Nick Flatt in the front gallery with his signature oversized photorealistic come-hither lovelies, and also introducing some more impressionistic works including several nudes and photo-negative-style renditions of hundred-dollar bills (cogent commentary on the current worth of American currency). Centerpiecing the show is a crushed glitter-coated Geo Metro.
In the rear gallery, Robert Xavier Burden's breathtaking oversized paintings practically canonize action figures and superheroes, vivid and impressive in composition, color, framing, meticulousness and detail (what else is there?). However the totality of certain works transits uncomfortably close to the art of Kehinde Wiley. Of note is a set of action figure portraits that each incorporate either a complete or partial preserved specimen of their real-life creature inspirations/counterparts displayed in shadowbox enclosures beneath the painted figures.
Rounding out the docket in the project spaces are mythic erotica-infused chronicles by the venerable Van Arno, and exquisitely unsettling pencil drawings by C3, so precise that might easily be confused with photographs.
