John Berggruen Gallery: Mark di Suvero - Selected Small Works.
Comment by AB: You might characterize the sculpture of Mark di Suvero as the sensitive side of heavy metal by the way that he so gracefully combines and balances such crude scrap-like forms. His work might be considered as Calder from the ground up rather than from the top down, these industrial-strength floor-mounted mobiles. Definitely worth a visit.

Gallery Paule Anglim: Deborah Butterfield.
Review by RWM: Amazing horses in bronze and abstraction. Quite a thrill just to be in their presence. Powerful primal experience to be next to the representation of these wondrous beings. Larger than life and spiritual in a sense. Totems.
Comment by AB: They look like wood, but they're bronze. And they're remarkable. I've seen occasional lame-o attempts by other artists to mimic these composite horses, but no sculptor can even come close to Deborah Butterfield. Miraculously anatomically immaculate. In fact, while I'm waxing laudatory, I might as well slap a rare and highly coveted "How Do Dey Do Dat" Award on these babies. Love 'em. Go see

Modernism Gallery: Pierre Antoniucci - Question de Temps (Matter of Time).
Comment by AB: Literary, mythical and historic threads are apparent throughout the art of French artist Pierre Antoniucci, but his sense of composition and interplays of texture are what really consummate the work. These paintings are inspired by the poetry of 2008 Prix Guillaume Apollinaire winner, Alain Borer (the Prix Guillaume Apollinaire is one of the most important awards for poetry in France). In the rear gallery, Antoniucci presents a series of portraits painted against stark unresolvable backgrounds, resulting in cryptic personality studies that are at times almost haunting. Good show; stop on by.

Comment by AB: A packed gallery packed with art, the perfect fundraising combination to benefit arts programs at Hospitality House, an organization that has served the homeless community in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood since 1967. Loads of quality art up for auction tonight, both at silent and live auctions, make for the type of night where lucky bidders were certainly able to come away with bargains. Don't miss next year's event; this is a good one.
