Altman Siegel Gallery: Nate Boyce - Knockdown Texture.
Comment by AB: Nate Boyce continues to refine is video and sculptural techniques. For the tangible portion of the art, he constructs free-standing painted steel pedestals, each with neatly incorporating a flat screen. For the intangible portion, each screen plays an endless-loop video of an abstract form-- which Boyce sculpts, films and digitally manipulates-- suspended and rotating in space. Several video stills, also mounted into handcrafted painted steel frames, are displayed along the gallery's walls. Good art; go see.

Comment by AB: A selection of works by some of the gallery's favorite artists, from Ess Eff and beyond. Most notable of the batch? Hiro Kurata's Op Art oddity, Portrait of a Slugger. Stop on by.

Southern Exposure: Intimate Science. Curated by Andrea Grover.
Artists: BCL (Georg Tremmel + Shiho Fukuhara), Center for PostNatural History, Markus Kayser, Allison Kudla, Machine Project, Phil Ross.
Comment by AB: Combine art, science and technology and what do you get? This exhibit. In the winner's circle, fungus-meister Phil Ross cultivates reishi mushrooms into sustainable building materials by growing them in brick-shaped prefabricated forms. He then uses the dense finished products to construct walls, arches and the like. Not sure of the longevity factor here, but they sure seem viable now. Not your typical art show... and worthy of a perusal.

Steven Wolf Fine Arts: Bessma Khalaf - Re-Enchanter.
Comment by AB: Bessma Khalaf enlists the assistance of sorcerers, witchcraft, magic, the dead, and an appreciable degree of creative legerdemain to transform the everyday into the extraordinary. In so doing, she demonstrates that your basic garden variety reality is never an obstacle, but rather a steppingstone to fantastic and astonishing outcomes that only we ourselves have the power to actualize. In-person viewing recommended. And don't forget the video in the back.
