Modernism Gallery: James Hayward - Silence Technology; Stephen Somerstein - Marching for Freedom, Selma to Montgomery, 1965.
Review by RWM: Fascinating monochrome paintings by James Hayward allow the viewer to closely examine the artistic process. Broad brush strokes are taken here; one can notice different things about individual paintings, not just in terms of color, but also style. Some of the colors seem unusual is if created by the author. A fabulous encounter with how art is made.
Comment by AB: In the rear gallery, re-experience one of the great moments in American civil rights history through Stephen Somerstein's documentary photographs of the 1965 Freedom March from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. In the front gallery, James Hayward's ultra-impasto paintings are as thick and rich as any you'll ever see.

Gallery Wendi Norris: Come With Me - Tomokazu Matsuyama; Yorgo Alexopoulos - Clouds.
Comment by AB: In the front gallery, sumptuous color-drenched cross-cultural fantasies by Tomokazu Matsuyama meld East with West, Japan and America in particular, and reference their influences on his upbringing. In the side gallery, faux computer systems by Yorgo Alexopoulos fascinate with their constantly flashing theatrics, each concealing a diorama, visible only from the rear, that appears to eerily reference a particular catastrophic event. Good show on both counts. Definitely recommended.

Gallery 16: Rex Ray Memorial.
Comment by AB: This is really more of a celebration than a memorial, but sad just the same. Rex Ray brought joy to the lives of so many, not only through is art, but also his personality. This look back at his diverse and extensive oeuvre represents only a small sample of his considerable accomplishments.

a.Muse Gallery: Monumental - Large scale Woodcuts and Monotypes by Sirima Sataman & Barry Ebner.
Comment by AB: The show's title sums it up. Sirima Sataman's road-trip woodcuts star a vintage VW van while Barry Ebner's architectural monotypes wax abstract.
