Andrea Schwartz Gallery: Robin Kandel - distance.

Comment by AB: Robin Kandel themes this series of works on travel and distance, both literal and figurative. Several of the compositions contain exactly one mile's worth of pencil likes, some are folded to resemble paper roadmaps, still others recall the days when she would sit in the back seat of the family car playing with an Etch-A-Sketch.

Comment by AB: Jenny Odell co-opts small portions of images appropriated from Google satellite views to illustrate the pervasiveness of industrial development and commerce. By digitally excising and collaging multitudes of structures and objects like trains, planes, cargo ships, water treatment plants, circular crop fields, parking lots and landfills into complex compositions, she calls our attention to the many ways in which the accomplishments of modern civilization enhance the quality of our lives while at the same time, adversely impact our environment. Worth a visit. You really have to see these close up.
