Hosfelt Gallery: Chris Ballantyne - Some Songs from the Shore; Stephanie Metz - Amorphozoa.

Comment by AB: Fine recondite paintings and ink & wash works on paper by Chris Ballantyne, some architectural, but most having to do with when land meets sea. Context is extracted out, thereby bequeathing the viewer maximum room to roam. Like 'em. As if that's not enough, Stephanie Mets puts forth a conspicuously curious convocation of dense, impeccably coiffed animal hair sculptures, several accented with porcupine quills. Stranger than strange, but after all's said and done, I gotta say I like 'em. Sidle on by; you won't be disappointed.

Marina Abramovic Institute: Yingmei Duan and Zhou Tao - Non-Aligned. Curated by Jovana Stokic.

Comment by AB: Two internationally recognized Chinese performance artists grace San Francisco with two new site-specific performances. Upstairs, Yingmei Duan, suitcase in hand, transits about the space as if travelling from country to country, literally unpacking and packing herself at each destinations, while unleashing an unsettling dissertation at every step of the way. Downstairs, multiple videos by Zhou Tao address urbanization, industrialization and regimentation in China. Several videos by Uingmei Duan, one on a TV monitor ensconced in a mound of garbage, round the production out.

Support the Marina Abramovic Institute. San Francisco is privileged to have it.

Studio Gallery: Paul Ferney - California Landscapes.

Review by RWM, images c/o Studio Gallery: Paul Ferney captures the wonder and stillness of wild California. One can enjoy the solitude in these evocative works, remembering the pleasant days outdoors in the moderate climate. There is much variety on display including the gorgeous seashores, valleys, fields, trees and mountains. The sea changes in shades of blue, jade and gray. Imagine being there alone in the pleasant slight breeze. The experience is captured like in a photograph.
