Introductory instant First Thursday poem composed on the spot by Zach Houston at SF Camerawork:
forced thirst daily to
be defied by mere
common sense
appetites
than the
image
public
is mostly
concerned
with appearances
at the expense of
content and business
Poet Zach Houston in the heat of creative fervor.

Gallery Paule Anglim: Enrique Chagoya - Works on Paper.
Comment by AB: Experience Enrique Chagoya's incisive editorial expositories in an impressive array of mediums including oversized charcoal drawings, text-based pieces, mixed media works on paper, and graphics. Always a contemplative experience. Go see.

Haines Gallery: Terra Firma - Paintings by Max Cole; The Old Boys' Club (aka Katya Bonnenfant) - La Destitution de la Jeune Fille.
Comment by AB: Lapse into a state of linear bliss courtesy of Max Cole's highly refined acrylics on linen-- impressive at a distance, even better up close. In the anteroom, Katya Bonnenfant (currently monikering herself around as "The Old Boys' Club") puts forth an elaborate symbol-saturated adventure centered around the trials and tribulations of a young girl vs modern life. Pick of First Thursday on both counts.

Fraenkel Gallery: Katy Grannan - Boulevard.
Comment by AB: Berkeley photographer Katy Grannan tells me the subjects of her uncompromisingly intense portraits are street people of San Francisco and Los Angeles, photographed in direct sun against stark white walls along the boulevards where they hang (she mentions Santa Monica Boulevard in particular). At times, you almost don't want to look... but you do... you have to, really. Being forced to face all these folks you really don't want to think about requires reflection on who they are, what their lives might be like, and maybe even why you're here looking at them while they're there living it.

Jack Fischer Gallery: Dan Lydersen - Blue Skies From Now On
Comment by AB: Take a wigged out safari through Dan Lydersen's brain via his paintings, and in so doing, behold a confounding cornucopia of outlandishly flabbergasting circumstances. Stop on by.

Toomey Tourell Gallery: Michael Ajerman - Glossolilia.
Comment by AB: I'm gonna guess that this series of fiery vital expressionist semi-representational paintings by Michael Ajerman, an American artist living in London, depicts what life is like in Glossolilia.

Scott Nichols Gallery: William Garnett - An Aerial Aesthetic.
Comment by AB: See how William Garnett transformed aerial photography from utilitarian pursuit into fine art in this select survey of works dating from the early 1950s through the mid-1980s.
