Jessica Silverman Gallery: The Politics of Portraiture - Group exhibition
Artists: Kenneth Bergfeld, Ccile B. Evans, Matthew Angelo Harrison, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Jamian Juliano-Villani, Josh Kline.
Comment by AB: How many different ways can you create a portrait? You can always paint or sculpt them in traditional ways, but these days you can also program them into computers and print them out in three dimensions, materialize them in video, or if you happen to be a genetic scientist, even create living, breathing, growing plants and animals in laboratories. See snippets of all of that here... plus more. Stop on by.

Jessica Silverman Gallery South: Tony Hope - LILAC
Comment by AB: Tony Hope references the good old days growing up in a lower middle-class Michigan town and then as his education progressed, gradually becoming aware that life's a little more complicated than simply going to Kmart or hanging out at the mall. The installation's soundtrack consists of Kmart background music provided by corporate headquarters circa the 1980s.

Romer Young Gallery: Amanda Curreri - Eff
Comment by AB: Some of the mixed-media works in the show homage specific individuals, but they're all more about attitude, states of mind, and ways of being. Good art; go see.

Comment by AB: During the course of the evening 122 artists, from established to just starting out, make art in one-hour shifts. The instant each piece is complete, it's put up for sale at a fixed price of $75. A great way to support a great arts organization and add a few gems to your collection at the very same time. Always worth attending. Wanna see some artists in action? OK, here...
