Catharine Clark Gallery: Stephanie Syjuco - Neutral Calibration Studies (Ornament + Crime)

Comment by AB: Stephanie Syjuco collages up a mix of history, ethnicity, colonialism, popular culture, appropriated imagery, consumerism and more-- part color and part black & white-- in this editorialized parsing of today's complex realities. Referencing how we tend to measure everything up and "calibrate" our lives, she includes a large fabric gray scale in the front gallery and a color one in the rear gallery. There's loads of back-story I'm sure but for me it's the overall quality and presentation. Good show; go see.

Mighty Box Gallery: Suburban Dreams, Season One, Monopoly - Hugo Kobayashi

Comment by AB: Hugo Kobayashi tells me he grew up in Southern California suburbia and that these paintings are commentaries on the American dream of home ownership, the growing wealth disparity between the richest rich and the middle class, and the fact that in Monopoly, one player ends up owning everything while everyone else goes broke. Kinda like 'em.
