Baer Ridgway Exhibitions: Rebecca Goldfarb - Implied.

Review by RWM: The subliminal and the phallic rule in this collection of art with inner meanings. One may look closely to see that there is more here than one notices at a casual glance. Witness the barely perceptible images in Rebecca Goldfarb's color field photographs. Her flashlights are especially sexy.

Comment by AB: Certainly worth a visit-- the color field photos and monument to erectile abundance in particular. Good show.

Peanut Gallery SF: Still, Life - Works by Jesse Hlebo.

Review by RWM: Terrific installation and video performance piece. It may remind one of "Bartelby the Scrivener" by Herman Melville, told also with wry repititions. One however need not make a purchase to remember the depressing message.

Comment by AB: I'm partial to Jesse Hlebo's three limited edition scans of dust.

    Jack Hanley Gallery: Final Show.

Artists: Tauba Auerbach, Carter, Ajit Chauhan, Chris Johanson, Ed Loftus, Alicia Mccarthy, Shaun O'Dell, Leslie Shows, Kal Spelletich.

Comment by AB: Jack Hanley's San Francisco swan song is a genuinely bittersweet event, and not surprisingly, enormously well attended. After twenty years of gallery shows here in town, Hanley has decided to consolidate his innovative endeavors at the New York City location. We're gonna miss you Jack... bigtime.

Goforaloop Gallery: Matt Leunig - Rock Art and Concert Posters.

Comment by AB: Artist Matt Leunig tells me he's got somewhere in the vicinity of 60 rock and concert posters to his credit during his seven year career. Good stuff; check it out.

The Shooting Gallery: Meticulous Engagements - New Works by Kris Kuksi and Christy Langer.

Comment by AB: Exceptionally intense sculpture duo show features the ultimate in hard-to-dust micro scale obsession by Kris Kuksi...../ and by Christy Longer, the only inanimate animals on the planet that are capable of ripping your face off if you get too close. It's a purebred go-see.

    White Walls Gallery: New Territory.

Artists: Henry Gunderson, Akira, Robert Burden, Cheryl Molnar, Mark Warren Jacques.

Review by Kristin Farr: Five artists in this month's group show at White Walls create a lively dialogue. Akira Beard offers societal critiques and brings back memories of inane right-wing phrases with two words (Freedom Fries) in a wall painting above his portraits of American cultural icons. Cheryl Monar's painted paper collage strips of rural landscapes are nicely crafted, the kind of stuff you want to stare at for a long time. Her palette makes me sense an inexplicably dark undertone as she is explores "the gap between societal expectations and the freedom to be individual," according to the press release.

To display his framed works, Portland artist Mark Warren Jacques builds a stand-alone wallpapered wall overnight, complete with a small window leading to a larger painting. His work flies off the wall-- most pieces sold within a couple of hours of the opening. Great little details like a tiny twig hanging next to a painting featuring a very similar twig detail. The small window also has a little altar below it with a collection of objects like shells and a spool of burgundy thread. His work feels very meditative, and he turns triangles into magic. His Free Life Center project will tour the West Coast this summer.

Comment by AB: Most art in the show's under $600; plenty under $300. It's a buy!

Gallery Heist: We Ride At Night.

Artists: Cody Cochrane, Jay Howell, David Scott Mabry, D. Young V, Ruthie Swanson, Jason Vivona, Ryan De La Hoz, Brian Henderson, Jesse Balmer, Liz Seward, Chris Wells, Mike Bennett, Pacolli, Doodles, Jared Powell, Joe Leonard, Matthew Izen, Marbrisa Aceves, Dean Sleeper, Porous Walker, Jerry Ilkenhons, more.

Review by Kristin Farr: Show packed with skate art, bloody art, and bloody skate art. Two of my personal favorites, Porous Walker and Ryan De La Hoz, contribute appropriate musings. Porous ponders what trees might be when they grow up (mulch, or killed and skated upon), and Ryan shows a double-sided introspective piece, a skull t-shirt design, and one of his signature cut-paper collage pieces. I've written about these two artists before (Porous here, Ryan here) -- their work is worth following. Plenty of other good (and shocking) art in the mix by others who ride at night.
