Modernism Gallery: Jacques Villegl - Traces, Dcollages from 1956-2000
Comment by AB: Jacques Villegl was a founding member of the Nouveau Raliste group (with Yves Klein, Pierre Restany, Arman, Raymond Hains, Mimmo Rotella and others). His collaged scraps of posters torn from city walls might be called early works of sampling or appropriation art.

Jessica Silverman Gallery: Matthew Angelo Harrison - Prototype of Dark Silhouettes; David Huffman - Urban Vernacular
Comment by AB: In the front gallery see Matthew Angelo Harrison's traditional African sculptures and animal skulls encased in finely machined and finished resin blocks. Excerpts of history, evolution and tradition entombed or perhaps even imprisoned in modern-day contexts. In the rear gallery, David Huffman paints pop culture icons, historical references and activist embellishments into his energized abstractions. Good show; stop on by.

Altman Siegel Gallery: Trevor Paglen - Impossible Objects
Comment by AB: Artworks dedicated to the history space flight highlighted by a a 100 foot mylar "sculpture" (balloon) to be launched into orbit this summer. Not every manmade object circling the earth has to serve a scientific or technological purpose.

Comment by AB: We've got our facades, mission statements, outward manifestations, exclusionary cabals, entitlements and such, but every once in a while, the real us's seep through.
