JANCAR JONES - LIMN - AMPERSAND - PING PONG - ART 94124 - D-STRUCTURE - EDO - 03.06.09
Jancar Jones Gallery: Nancy White.
Comment by AB: Small format wall-mounted oil paintings on bent steel by Nancy White are executed with the scrupulousness and exactitude of a skilled machinist. The accompanying expository perpetrates to rough me up with unrepentantly extravagant palaver like "liminal," "morphology," "situational flexibility," "perspectivally uncertain" and such, but I don't care. Flog me all you want! I like 'em 'cuz they're good-- and good is good enough for me. Reasonably priced at $1000 each.

Limn Gallery: China Avant Garde, Landscape in Transit - Han Bing, Yang Yongliang, Zhang Wei; Ming Ren - Poetry in Painting.
Comment by AB: In the main gallery, Ming Ren evolves classical Chinese landscape painting, both on scrolls and on canvas, but does it in a way that even adherants of longstanding tradition can appreciate. Of the three-person show in the side galleries, I gotta go with Han Bing's foreboding inverted photographic images of Beijing big city life as reflected off of rivers, streams and pools of standing water, polluted and rank with garbage and industrial waste. Makes you think about what "progress" really means. It's all good here; go see. For those of you scoring at home, Limn was showing contemporary Chinese art years before it was the thing to do.

Ampersand International Arts: Amplyfing the Twilight.
Artists: Shashi Chittle, David Coyle, Ryan Fenchel, Sayre Gomez, Alison Ruttan. Curated by Brian Andrews and Marc LeBlanc.
Comment by AB: According to the doctrine, "'Amplifying the Twilight' investigates the gray area between the rationality of hard science and the speculative intuition of culture." Sounds reasonable.

Ping Pong Gallery: Lindsey White - A Field Guide to the Atmosphere.
Comment by AB: Lindsey White is searching for the "secret of the world" and the artworks on exhibit here are representative of the current state of affairs of that investigation. Maybe the secret is that there is no secret. Could be. Then again... Well, good luck in any event. Stop by if you're in the vicinity.

D-Structure: John Wentz - Adaptive Radiation.
Comment by AB: Oil paintings on aluminum panel and works on paper comprise a confident and versatile display of representational works by John Wentz. Sorry about the images; difficult lighting to shoot in.
