Patricia Sweetow Gallery: Joachim Bandau - Red & Black; Cornelia Schulz - New Paintings.

Comment by AB: Enjoy clean geometry in watercolor and high-gloss sculptural works by German artist Joachim Bandau. Bay Area artist Cornelia Schulz's unique zigzag paint and sculpture amalgams are equally estimable. Saunter on by.

Rena Bransten Gallery: Linda Geary - Inside Out; Sam Perry - New Works.

Comment by AB: Magical organic sculptures by Sam Perry start out as found wood, but they sure don't end up that way. On the walls, Linda Geary works the white space right in her eminently ebullient abstractions.

    Hespe Gallery: Lawrence Gipe.

Review by RWM: History and life in the olden days are evoked here in these images from times past. Nice shadows and gleams of light. Though somber, the work is beautiful nonetheless.

Gallery 291: Beth Moon - Augers and Soothsayers and Island Of The Dragon's Blood.

Review by Clare Coppel: Beth Moon shows platinum/pallaidium photographic prints of chickens and trees. Sound like a barnyard? It is... and the classiest group of chickens I've ever seen. The trees look like they're from another planet, but really they're on an island far far away.

Review by RWM: Fascinating... chickens with personalities. A nice variety of them on display; you can practically imagine what each one is like. Individual histories are evident.

Even more amazing are the exotic trees from The Island of The Dragon's Blood in Yemen-- trees you'll never see in the continental USA. Though earthy, they also seem otherworldly in these strange and foreign landscapes you'll likely experience for the very first time. Perhaps Hollywood should shoot the next science fiction blockbuster out there in the shade.

The Performance Art Institute: Badly Happy: Pain, Pleasure, and Panic in Recent Romanian Art. Curated by Erwin Kessler.

Artists: Dumitru Gorzo, Nicolae Comanescu, Marius Bercea, Gili Mocanu, Anca Muresan, Suzana Dan, Anca Benera, Ecaterina Vrana, Ana Banica, Sorin Tara, Florin Ciulache, Roman Tolici, Alexandru Radvan, Alexandru Patatics, Alexandru Antik.

Review and images by Meredith Winner: The artists showcased in this exhibition present emotionally charged works which question the polarized values of Western society. There is an underlying vein of conflicted identity, isolation and personal struggle that each artist portrays through very different means and images.

The performance piece by Gili Mocanu and Lucian Alexe physically and literally demonstrates this struggle. The artist, wrists tied with ropes attached to heavy sand bags, arduously pulls the ropes through the rafters, and in so doing, covers himself with sand that pours from the bags. He ends on his knees exhausted and in a pose reminiscent of begging.

The imagery, performance and exhibition as a whole deal not only with what is actually depicted, but also with what is absent. Each individual voice, desperate to be heard, culminates in a loud artistic output.

Ever Gold Gallery: Mark McCloud - Debris from the Underground.

Review by Clare Coppel: Mark McCloud's giclee prints made from pieces in his LSD blotter art collection are on display. Whoa-- trippy, patterned and intense. This is also a opportunity to see art that is part of San Francisco's fascinating social and political history.

Comment by AB: Vintage LSD blotter paper art from the collection of Mark McCloud.
