Jenkins Johnson Gallery: Stories Today - Khalif Kelly and Lisa Schmaltz.
Comment by AB: Lisa Schmaltz combines cut patterned squares of coffee-stained paper into earthy "quilts" for your walls while Khalif Kelly concocts fanciful animation-style genre paintings with curious inscrutable outcomes.

Cain Schulte Gallery: David Buckingham - Don't Hate Me Because I'm Beautiful.
Review by Clare Coppel: Large colorful sculptural pieces made of found metal from Southern California deserts are worked by David Buckingham into graphic excerpts from contemporary culture. Indeed-- "Simplicity is the key good design."
Comment by AB: Found metal wall sculpture by David Buckingham-- as entertaining as ever.

Dolby Chadwick Gallery: Tom Lieber - Descend Ascend.
Review by RWM: Dark fields in Tom Lieber's abstracts evoke what may at the moment seem beyond our control. We can acknowledge the challenge here-- the approaching storm or outgoing effluent. A reminder that it's happening now and to be vigilant.
Comment by AB: According to Tom Lieber, his determined gestural abstracts are inspired by the optimistic promise that we may one day reverse our environmental abuses, ultimately to reclaim the paradise that once was.

Hangart Gallery: Genius Loci - Katja Leibenath.
Review by RWM: Interesting mixture here of abstractions and urban scenery. Nice to see these pictures of the historical China Basin shipping yards. The dripping and odd colorings allude to various nonrepresentational styles. The pleasant colors are upbeat, liberating viewers from the melancholy of the past. You can sense the moods presented, even if they are somewhat tempered by thoughts of industrial pollution.

Kokoro Studio: More - Sebastien Roux aka SUPERDEUX.
Review by Anneliese Vobis: A colorful innocent pictograph style characterizes the graphic imagery of artist Superdeux. He expresses his messages in a simplified yet powerful style. Socio-political issues are wrapped in a new form of language.

Ever Gold Gallery: Josh Short - Touch Down Jesus; Jeremiah Jenkins - Blue Collar Bushido.
Review by Anneliese Vobis: Josh Shorts's dark theatrical installation Touch Down Jesus has an enormous site-specific presence in the gallery space. The artist introduces the audience to contemporary, environmental issues. The Monster truck based in a wooden construction is a reflection on society's destructive behavior towards nature. In the rear gallery, Jeremiah Jenkins confronts us with his experiences about blue collar jobs which are low paid but often high in risk. The Japanese Samurai is an excellent metaphor for Blue Collar Bushido.
Comment by AB: Josh Short's badass, wigged out, borderline dangerous installation features a hopped up supercharged remote controlled monster truck, death metal music screaming from a crucifix stereo cabinet, and a tequila-packed piņata. This dude's got the moxie.

Unspeakable Projects: THIS MEANS WAR.
Artists: Justin Limoges, Matt Momchilov, AMTK, Hannah Ireland, Steffani Jemison.
Review by RWM: Weird and provocative group show. These folks are willing to take their pants down, and more. Artistic forces have assembled here. The upshot is confrontational with strange figural depictions and odd compositions presented in diverse media.
