John Berggruen Gallery: Julian Lethbridge - Paintings.
Comment by AB: Highly ordered abstracts by Julian Lethbridge are disciplined in every detail, particularly when you zoom in close to see how his motion-rich compositions are cordoned off into sectors by precise lines and grids. Upstairs is a satisfying survey of portraits by Chuck Close. Worth a visit.

Dolby Chadwick Gallery: Joshua Meyer - Rustle, Sparkle, Flutter, Float.
Comment by AB: Figures and portraits emerge from mists of mottled impasto like distant memories or elusive subconscious contemplations.

Hespe Gallery: Robert Townsend and William Lagattuta.
Comment by AB: Both of the artists in this quirky doubleheader hark back to the past with Robert Townsend painting idyllic yet slightly off kilter renditions of the American good life circa the mid-20th century. He dresses the part, too. William Lagattuta meanwhile waxes more conceptual, focusing on ideas of signage by painting weathered arrows to nowhere on distressed metal panels.

Scott Richards Contemporary Art: Yrjo Edelmann.
Comment by AB: Just in time for The Holidays, and some of the best trompe l'oeil art I've seen in a while. Yrjo Edelmann's shimmering haphazardly wrapped packages look so real that you want to open 'em right up, but that's never gonna happen because they're perfectly flat painted canvases. A number are irregularly shaped in order to further finesse the ruse. Go see.

George Krevsky Gallery: Helen Berggruen - A Restless Harmony.
Comment by AB: Swirling brushstrokes lend a buoyant air of imaginativeness to otherwise representational interiors, still-lifes and outdoor scenes, at times inducing a sense of unease or maybe even turmoil.
