San Francisco Art Openings: Art at the Dump SF Recycling and Disposal

NORCAL WASTE SYSTEMS ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM
ART AT THE DUMP; RICK CARPENTER
OPENING 04.23.04

Comment: What a bunch of garbage! No, really. Carpenter takes a bunch of garbage and makes art out of it. And that's not all-- if you want, you can buy it and take it home. So what if you threw it out three months ago? Anyway, here's how the whole thing works, I think: Carpenter sifts through piles of garbage, euphemistically referred to as recycling, salvages mostly pieces of metal, takes them to the studio, cuts them up, and welds them back together into sculptures, mainly in repetitive patterns, but not always. The guy must love to weld because the total number welds on all sculptures combined is huge. Art at the dump openings are always fun, well attended, and smelly. Hey-- it's the dump. What'd you expect? But smell no more; this venue is history, and the new one's gonna be nicer.
