OPENING 09.30.04 Comment: Galeria de la Raza's got a winner here with some seriously good protest art, in design as well as message, the best of which competes nicely alongside much of the better propaganda art that's ever been produced-- anywhere. No matter what your stand on any or all of these spit-roasted sociopolitical issues, the graphics are sure to rankle your hackles while simultaneously soothing your aesthetic sensibilities. Also noteworthy is a hilarious series of photographs by James McCaffry titled "The Chica-Iranian Project, Orientalism Gone Wrong in Aztlan," portraits of local performance artists costumed to combine Latin American, American, Asian, religious, and Middle Eastern elements. Artist/Artists: Anne Balsamo, Los Bushwackers, Enrique Chagoya, The Chica-Iranian Project, Lawrence Colación, Rocío Con Hong, Sandra de la Loza, Sergio De La Torre, Caleb Duarte, Verónica Duarte, René García, José Antonio Hernández Diez, John Leanos, La Pocha Nostra, Los Matamoscas, San Francisco Print Collective, Taco Shop Poets, Claudia X. Valdez, The Welfare Poets, Youth Public Media Design Group.
