San Francisco Art Galleries - First Thursday Art Openings: December 6, 2007

SAN FRANCISCO ART GALLERIES OPENINGS
FIRST THURSDAY; 12.06.07
(with assistance from DeWtt Cheng)

General comment by AB: Well... it's off to Florida for many of us, myself not included-- Miami to be exact. Thirty galleries from Ess Eff alone, I'm told, have elected to insert themselves into one or another of the 21-27 art fairs (depending on who you talk to) taking place this week. Everybody who's anybody (or who thinks they're anybody) is spinning the wheel this year, perpetrating to cash in on the bounty c/o 40,000-50,000 supposed art buyers (some of whom surely are) careening into South Florida from every cultured cranny of the planet. Why? To trump each other's canny panache at procuring material repercussions of creative expression in this, the World Series of Art. Why else?

So OK. Math time. Let's say there's 25 art fairs, each fair averaging 100 galleries, each gallery bringing or having access to 10 works of art by each of 10 artists. How many pieces of art do we have in total? Take your time; you can use your abacuseseses. Right you are-- 250,000 (aka a quarter million) oeuvres-- on the block for 40,000-50,000 supposed art buyers (some of whom surely are) to snap up like carp battling for bread crusts at the foot of the dock. Hmmm. I can barely wait to nab the wrap on this one.

Meanwhile back at the blustery shakeytown ranch, the wind blows, the rain pelts, and most galleries are either closed for the duration or not opening shows, which means-- you guessed it-- a perfect opportunity to transit those precarious provincial territories where only the intrepid dare to trek. So don your galoshes and hone those machetes, my lovelies, 'cuz we're about to take us a wilderness safari...

George Krevsky Gallery: Fifteenth Anniversary Party.

Comment by AB: This one's from First Wednesday, actually, a lively event celebrating George Krevsky Gallery's fifteen years in business, highlighted by the kindling of the Chanukah lights. Lining the walls, we have what you might call a cull of Krevsky's greatest hits. Mazeltov George Krevsky!

Hang Art: Anthony May - The Evolution Will Not Be Televised.

Comment by AB: Anthony May treatises on the continuing debate between Creationism and Evolution through a series of decidedly abstract paintings and drawings, all of which incorporate scientific and/or religious indications.

20 goto 10: Tabitha Calhoun - White Out.

Comment by AB: It's like 25 minutes before the show's supposed to start and the gallery's closed (?), but Tabitha Calhoun's snow globe art looks pretty kicky through the windows, and from what I can see, there's plenty to choose from.

Mark Wolfe Contemporary Art: Robert Jack - Elements of Histories; Nellie King Solomon - Folded Pours.

Review by DeWitt Cheng: Francesca Berrini is a Portland artist who makes medium- to large-sized maps of imaginary places by collaging snippets of existing maps. Alternate worlds are always fun to look at, even for us living in Pac Rim earthquake country.

DeWitt Cheng writes for Artweek, Art Ltd., www.SanFranciscoArtMagazine.com and www.Shotgun-Review.com.

Comment by AB: Impressive, effective, admirably labor-intensive. Like 'em.

Visual Aid: Jim Winters - Film Still Drawings.

Review by DeWitt Cheng: Jim Winters' "Film Still Drawings" in charcoal and watercolor are based on stills from French and Japanese movies of the 1960s. Winters discovered his subject while doing a film poster for an Ozu film festival; the scenes (as photographed from a TV) are full of irony and humor.

Comment by AB: Like 'em.

Urban-Eyes Industries: Ezra Cattan - Sea Ranch Architecture; Mark Luthringer - Ridgemont Typologies.

Comment by AB: Ezra Cattan examines the contradictory nature of utopian-esque Sea Ranch, a planned community designed to harmonize with the surroundings, but which imposes strict guidelines on its residents and their residences. Mark Luthringer's Ridgement Typologies reveal unsettling levels of sameness in mainstream American architecture, urban planning, design, and detailings. Engaging expose on both counts. Urban-eyes is a stock photography agency catering to urban planners and related professions.

Aqua Surf Shop presents at PKIRKEBY: Loose Connections.

Artists: Rob Brodman, Paul Ferraris, Art Gimbel, Elizabeth Pepin, Scott Eggers, Dickson A. Keyser, Mark Gordon.

Comment by AB: An abundance of oceanic imagery by seven photographers pervades the display areas, each artist approaching the assignment from his or her own particular perspective, and the place is absolutely mobbed with showgoers. I teeter on the brink of cluelessness, having never heard of PKIRKEBY, but fortunately Kelly Tunstall be in da house to enlighten me-- PKIRKEBY is the frame shop of choice for many local artists.

The Tricycle: Sarah Lenore Nelson - Part Desire.

Comment by AB: I learn some new vocabulary here-- "vagina dentata"-- Latin for "toothed vagina," intermittently referenced in Sarah Nelson's art, and apparently having to do with the fear certain men have that if they dare insert their erectus elongatus into a euphlopian envelope, that's the last time they're ever gonna see it.
