SAN FRANCISCO ART GALLERIES OPENINGS
FIRST THURSDAY 11.02.06
REPORTED BY AIDIN MASSOUDI

111 Minna Gallery: Utopia.

Artists: Helen Garber, Suzanne Husky, Eric Joyner, Josh Keyes, Alexis Mackenzie, Chris Pew, Stephen Powers, John Sheridan, Casey Jex Smith, Winston Smith.

Comment: Utopia's mission is to show artists who create their own pictorial translations of "utopia," and at times, "dystopia." The show succeeds in that almost the entire collection, including the Suzanne Husky's hanging installation, proves to create an aura of the subject, Utopia.  Many seem to mock the notion of a utopia, by creating moods of utopia defined by overindulgent excess or stress, and the negative consequences of such, for example, what seems to be the mesage in the painting of the giant donuts landing in an orchid, all the while being attacked by alien/futurist gunships.
