General comment: Sorry for the delay in getting these online. I'm swamped with "real" work. But I got all the pix from everything and promise to catch up by New Years if not sooner. *** Hayes Valley Market, 580 Hayes Street, San Francisco, CA 94102: Hunters Point Shipyard Artists' Second Annual Holiday Show. Artists: Ivy Jacobsen, Carol Jessen, Christine Kendrick, Dennis King, Dimitri Kourouniotis, Indu Krishnan, Leslie Lowinger, Derek Lynch, Elaine Michaud, Carole R. Moore, Reiko Muranaga, Zannah Noe, Mark Paron, Joan Raymond, Michael Rodman, Jennifer Robinson, Stephanie Rossi, Karen Slater, Kim Smith, Kristiana Spaulding, Zabrina Tipton, David J. Trachtenberg, Jie Zhou, Estelle Akamine, John Arbuckle, Bob Armstrong, Jason Bernhardt, Richard Bolingbroke, Dominique Caron, Paula Clark, Mitchell Confer, Maeve Croghan, Monica Denevan, Robin Denevan, David Dion, Rebecca Fox, Paul Gralen, Marc Ellen Hamel, Irene Hendrick. Comment by AB: Always an exceptionally festive event (even though there's only been 2 of 'em-- but I've made it to both and hereby so testify). For you travel trailer connoisseurs, the event headquarters is a vintage Airstream parked out front. Plus this hot flash-- according the the official Hunters Point grapevine, Honorable Mayor Gavin Newsom showed up and whipped the dealie bob into a tizzy. One thing I love about the Hunters Point artists is that they understand strength-in-numbers, they work together, throw shows like this, and... you guessed it... sell art. David Dion (seated) - art. Artists: Marcel Dzama, Scott Kildall and Victoria Scott, Jeremiah Maddock, Lordy Rodriguez, j.otto Seibold, Ian Heubert, Josephine Taylor, Bob van Breda. Review by Jennifer Jeffrey: There is eye candy galore at Electric Works tonight. The foyer is lined with pieces from local artist and Chronicle comic strip creator Paul Madonna. There's lots of good stuff inside the main room too, including a huge piece by Josephine Taylor, sculptures by Scott Kildall and Victoria Scott, and a twisted map by Lordy Rodriguez that imagines Disney as its own state. I particularly like the wall of affordable Tiny Art, small pieces that range from postcard size to slightly bigger, by a number of different artists; they can be purchased individually for $40 each or as a set. Comment by AB: A little bit of everything here. Pencil sculptures, paintings, drawings, limited edition prints, and my favorite-- amusing paper sculptures by Scott Kildall and Victoria Scott including a Maltese Falcon, a Trojan Horse, a Yellow Submarine, and a Greek urn. Affordable too-- most pieces priced between $500-$1000. Perfect stocking stuffers. Maltese Falcon in paper by Scott Kildall and Victoria Scott. Trojan Horse in paper by Scott Kildall and Victoria Scott. Greek vase in paper by Scott Kildall and Victoria Scott. Jennifer Jeffrey photographs art by Marcel Dzama. Review and images by Jennifer Jeffrey: I bundle up and head over to Fort Mason on this cold December night, where I follow the paper signs to two narrow rooms where folding tables hold stacks of prints by the Printmaking Department of the San Francisco City College School of Art. People stand elbow-to-elbow sifting through the prints, which range from $10 to about $85 or so. Some of them are so-so, some are good, and a few are spectacular. The place has the fun, upbeat feel of a garage sale as people hunt for treasures, and a few lucky ducks will probably find a pretty picture beneath the tree this year. The basic idea. Heavy machinery. Wall of bargains. Assorted prints. Ambience. *** The LAB: Post-Postcard 12 - The 12th Annual Small Format Art Sale. Comment by AB: Postcard-size art from loads of local artists ranges in price from $1-$30. It's not just postcards though-- it can be anything; the only requirement is that whatever it is, it's about the size of a postcard. Options include fashion, jewelry, sculpture, prints, drawings, and of course, postcards. The basic idea. Art. Fashion. Naughty art. One more from the front lines. *** Mission 17 Gallery: Dream On! - The 5th Annual Juried Exhibition. Artists: Marisa Aragona, David Cicerone, Mikael Gaspay, Jason Gowans, Jason Hanasik, Dmitriy Kustov, Amy Wing Fong Lee, Liz Maher, John K Melvin,Piero Passacantando, Laura Plageman, Jessica Rosen, Gareth Spor, James Tantum, Chris Thorson, Izumi Yokoyama; collaborative works by Teresa Cunniff & Gary R. Weisberg, and Skye Thorstenson & Travis Mathews. Comment by AB: It's art about dreaming-- either dreaming of a better world, or dreaming naively on, like we can actually do something about life on this planet. I prefer the former. Anyway, the Mission 17 annual juried show consistently manages to ferret out some pretty respectable new talent. Video art. Installation art. Lots of wound string art. Collage art. Cardboard sculpture art (nicely done). Audio art. Art (kinda like it). Curious sculptural textile art. Photograhy (sorta like it). *** BellJar: Artisan Jewelry. Review and images by Jennifer Jeffrey: The many temptations of BellJar become even more irresistible tonight as the 16th-Street boutique hosts local jewelry designers Kitten Hawk, Magnetic Honey, Canopy and Talisman. Sparkling wine flows as the designers arrange their glittery bits on the table, and it suddenly feels like The Holidays. If you're looking for a piece of jewelry that doesn't scream department store, this is a great place to find it. Artist jewelers. Jewelry. Jewelry. Jewelry. *** Yerba Buena Center for the Arts: transPOP - Korea Vietnam Remix. Artists: Lin + Lam (Lana LIN + H. Lan Thao LAM), Dinh Q. LÊ, An-My LÊ, Sandrine LLOUQUET, Tran Luong, LY Hoang Ly, NGUYEN Manh Hung, OH Yongseok, Area PARK's, SONG Sanghee's, Soon-MI YOO. Comment by AB: "Cutting-edge contemporary art by sixteen critically acclaimed artists from Vietnam, Korea and their respective diasporas in the United States." Themes include repercussions of the Cold War, the impact of rapid modernization, and influence of the military. It's not all serious though. There's everything from art that makes you think and reflect to art that's pure upbeat entertainment. And quite a bit more video work than you might expect. A window into a different culture and definitely worth a visit. Art. Art. Art. Art. Note the camouflaged figure in the video on the left (like it). Long view. These are quite delightful. Art. *** D-Structure: Josh Warren - Good BiPolaroid. Comment by AB: Josh Warren takes scrillions of slice/dice Polaroid portraits of himself and then groups and configures 'em every which way but loose. Engaging from both visual and technical perspectives. Polaroid photography by Josh Warren. Photographs closer. Photo closer. The view looking North. *** Addendum: Jay Howell debuts new print at Fecal Face Dot Gallery. Pete Doolittle + Sonja J. + art along the avene in Lower Haight. Barack Obama along the avenue in Lower Haight. *** |
