Hotel des Arts: Brazilianizing 2008. Artists: Claudia Kussano, Igor Capibaribe, Jamil Hellu, Judith Sakhri, Lallo Lemos, Mariangela Cintra, Mauricia Gandara, Regis Silva, Rogerio Leao, Vera Costa. Comment by AB: Art by Brazilians living in the Bay Area. It's that simple and no more complicated. Art. Art. Art. Art. Art. *** Modernism Gallery: Jonathon Keats - Universes Unlimited. Comment by AB: Conceptual artist Jonathon Keats, after spending tireless decades in the lab and enduring countless setbacks, rolls out his latest act of affordable intellectual artertainment-- your own personal DIY universe kit. The astoundingly affordable tab? $20. Keats wasn't quite able to work out all the kinks 'cuz you still need your own glass jar with lid and a piece of chewing gum (chewed) in order to actualize the deal, but his kit contains all other essential ingredients. Kinks notwithstanding, and considering the present state of the nation, it seems like a good idea to have your own universe on standby just in case the universe we've all come to know and love does the fizzle. Here we are - Universes Unlimited by Jonathon Keats - $20. Universe kits - $20. Universe kit assembly demonstration by Jonathon Keats. Keats explains how the dealie bob operates. Marianna Stark of Stark Guide in da house (also new Executive Director of SFADA *** Cain Schulte Gallery: Klari Reis - Molecular Vision; Carol Paxton Juliano - Remedy in Rebus. Comment by AB: According to the spiel, Karie Reis' intense exhilarating mixed media abstract paintings are "inspired by the observation through an electron microscope of her own cells' interaction with prescription drugs." Now I have no idea how Reis gets to look at her own cells through an electron microscope (maybe she knows somebody), but whatever kinda drugs she was on, it sure looks like her cells were having a good time. Meanwhile over in the salon suite, Carol Paxton Juliano's encaustic paintings are certain to soothe. Her curious high-relief wax paintings, on the other hand, remind me perhaps of deep sea life. Architects: Anderson Anderson Architecture, Conger Moss Guillard, Envelope A+D, Faulders Studio, Fougeron Architecture, Michael Harris Architecture / Grey Studio, Mark Horton / Architecture, Kuth Ranieri Architects, Leddy Maytum Stacy, Ross Drulis Cusenbery. Comment by AB: So here's the skinny... "In response to the public review process for the new CAMP museum in San Francisco's Presidio (aka the Contemporary Art Museum at the Presidio), ten architectural firms have been asked to provide conceptual site plan alternatives to what is currently before the public." Gallery 3A doesn't say who did the asking, but as near as I can tell, this appears to be somewhat of a commentary on the way of the project is currently progressing. According to the literature, however, the purpose of the exercise is NOT to suggest design alternatives, however however, when you freely volunteer that something is not something, then that kind of makes it the something it's not. Regardless of what the show may or may not represent, you've got a healthy sampling of architecture by forward-thinking practitioners. Worth a visit-- and tonight it's packed. Architecture. Architecture... woah... what's that thing on the right? That thing on the right (kinda like it). Architecture. Architecture. Circumstance. *** Fecal Face Dot Gallery: Titanium Expose. Artists: Anthony Lister, Blek Le Rat, Buff Monster, Chris Ryniak, Damon Soule, Dennis McNett, Henry Lewis, Julian Duron, Henry Gunderson, Joshua Petker, Mars 1, Matt Furie, Maya Hayuk, Mel Kadel, and Ryan Christian. Comment by AB: A cogent cull of Fecal favorites from across the land (SF, LA, NYC, Portland, and Chicago). Art. Art. Art closer. Art. Art. *** Queen's Nails Projects: Kelly Barrie - Astralfields and Other Manifestations; Mary Kelly - Antepartum. Comment by AB: There's a modicum of official artland mumbo jumbo perpetrating to justify this video marriage, an endless loop of a really pregnant Mary Kelly (stomach only) facing off against Kelly Barrie's squadron of amorphous dots and forms ceaselessly locomoting about a screen, with one of those spooky soundtracks that accompany oh so many many many videos playing in the background to weird it all up. So OK. Fine. Where are we going with this? I mean if you're gonna produce what essentially reduces to a static occurrence on video, why not save the electricity and just paint a painting or take a photograph? That said, the compositional aspects are adequately gratifying in both. Video by Kelly Barrie. Video by Mary Kelly. Theater goers. *** Paul Mahder Gallery: David Lee Baughan - Chrysalis, New Sculptures. Comment by AB: Appealing abstract and semi-representational stone sculptures by David Lee Baughan have somewhat of a mystical or meditative essence about them. Sculpture by David Lee Baughan. Sculpture. Sculpture. Attendance figures. *** Live Worms Gallery: Filipino Singles Night. Artists: Harvey Newman, Jamie Williams, Ida Badal, Rye Purvis, Piotr Rizov, Henry Gunderson, Ivan Bridges, Shaan Bevan, Tom Betthauser. Comment by AB: Art students San Francisco Art Institute get together and throw themselves a show. I continue to be a fan of Tom Betthauser's intricate imaginative atmospheric interiorscapes and city scenes. Art by Tom Betthauser. Pinkie cam detail of Tom Betthauser painting above (nice, huh?).
