LIMN Gallery: Sid Garrison Pencil Drawings - Signal Drift; Jaq Chartier - Testing.

Comment: The Jaq Chartier satin smooth mixed media paintings look like DNA tests, and in a way they're similar because the fades and runs of color result from chemical reactions between the oils, acrylics, and sealants used to make the paintings. So I get introduced to Sid Garrison, comment on the "scientific" nature of the art in the show, and he says his art has nothing to do with science. It's abstract pencil drawings that just happen to look science-like in the context of Chartier's work. Whatever they are, Garrison's art fascinates with its meandering color-coded intricacies, particularly in the ways the conspicuously cacophonous components coalesce into unified wholes. Comprende compadre?

Visual Aid: 12th Annual BIG DEAL.

Donating artists: John Arbuckle, Richard Bolingbroke, Teresa Camozzi, Jan Camp, Howie Cherman, Lauren Davies, Sally French, Robin McCloskey, Heather Wilcoxon, Gregg Renfrow, Wendy Schwartz, Jim Goldberg, Laurie Wyman-Heron, Cynthia Ona Innis, Kathryn Kain, Noah Lang, Jean Conner, David Cannon Dashiell, Beth Yarnelle Edwards, Charles Gute, Kara Maria, James Orlando, J. John Priola, Michael Johnstone, Inez Storer, Amy Trachtenberg, Termeh Dimi Yeghiazarian, Christopher Brown, Jerome Caja, Ann Veraldi, Binh Danh, Fred Stonehouse, Shaun O'Dell, David King, John J. Priola, Rex Ray, Robin Denevan, David Faulk, Richard Perri, Clinton Fein, Timothy Cummings, Laurie Hogan, Steve Gilbert, Mike Knutson, Tony Fitzpatrick, and many many more.

Comment: BIG DEAL is the annual fundraiser for Visual Aid, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping artists with life-threatening illnesses to continue making art. Here's how the event works-- over 600 artists donate art, and every piece is priced $125, no matter what it is, how long it takes to make, what it's made of, or who makes it. All the art's worth it, but a number of pieces are major bargains and if you want those, you have to camp out overnight to be first in line so you get first pick. (I talked to one determined collector who arrived at 5:30 AM, nearly 12 hours before the opening bell, and there were already 31 people ahead of him.) Plus there's a silent auction of non-art donations, a live auction of big-league art, and all kinds of other ways you can support this most worthy of causes.

BIG DEAL has evolved into a monster event, packing SomArts gallery with hundreds of aficionados and patrons who run around like maniacs trying to see everything, chasing down their favorites. The interesting part is that the art is hung randomly and there's no map to what's where, so snaring the good stuff becomes a hyperfrenetic treasure hunt. Plus there's copious food, beverage, entertainment, excitement, and schmooze to keep the hunt happy. Don't miss next year's.

Jack Hanley Gallery: Camilla Low (395 Valencia) - Karen Barbour (389 Valencia).

Comment: Glasgow via Oslo artist Camilla Low creates brightly colored painted wood, metal, and plexiglass sculptures-- rejuvenated Russian Constructivism of sorts-- clean, simple, shiny, direct, elemental. No irrelevancies.

Point Reyes artist Karen Barbous conjures up jagged primordial outsider interplanetary fantasies in watercolor and ink.

Root Division is a community arts and education organization offering art classes for adults and children. The building has a generous gallery area plus seventeen resident artist studios.
