Evolving Art Gallery: Dong Phan - Journey. Comment by AB: Here's a pleasant surprise-- uncommon dramatic abstract equine blends. Equine art is so often just for horse lovers, but these are different-- symbolic and transcendent to the point that anyone can appreciate them. The artist Dong Phan is Vietnamese-born, emigrating to the United States at age 13 and currently residing here in the Bay Area. He lived for ten years in Texas which may account for his considerable skill at painting horses. Good show; go see. Paintings by Dong Phan. Dong Phan - art. Art. Comment by AB: Group show courtesy of the photographers of Nish f21 offers various perspectives on expressing the concept of time-- according to the testimony, that is. Between you and me, it looks like your basic unthemed group photo show. The work's good and stuff, but how it all dovetails with "time," I have no idea. Photography by Nish f21. Photos. Photographs. Comment by AB: Part II-- Portrait-- of curator Brion Nuda Rosch's Landscape/Portrait/Pattern art show triple bill. There you have it in a nutshell. Art. This pretty much sums up Michigan right about now. Art. Nice pencil drawing by Jonathan Solo, but for $1600? Erk. Art. Long view. *** Mollusk Surf Shop: Craig Steely, Cathy Liu - LAVAFLOW. Comment by AB: Art by Cathy Liu, architecture by Craig Steely (husband and wife). Steely designs his houses for the coastal zone of the east side of the big island of Hawaii. They've got that fifties modern feel, minimal and open-- and perfect for the circumstances. Meanwhile, Cathy Liu's upbeat vibrant abstract representational blends have kind of a sixties/seventies pop culture sensibility to 'em. Vintage meets contemporary on all counts, or as they say in karmaland, everything is everything. Good show; go see. Architecture by Craig Steely. Architecture (Craig Steely). Craig Steely. Comment by AB: Just happen to be passing by Art Engine on my way to Omnicircus and find Luther Thie and assistant taking down the last part of his installation from the Beautiful Eyesores show-- an old telephone pole which juts horizontally from a faux wall (it's held up by super sturdy wood beam supports behind the wall). Hint: a chainsaw is involved in the denoument (but I'm not hanging around for that). This is Art Engine's swan song, by the way, but we may see them again in futue incarnation. The basic idea. One more view. *** Omnicircus: Robotspeak Sessions. Artists: Komega, Preshish Moments, Daniel Berkman aka colfax. Comment by AB: Electronic and experimental music in the eerie darkness of Omnicircus-- theater and concert hall by night, studio of sculptor Frank Garvey by day. Check out the website for upcoming events-- worth it. Here we are. Inside-- performance in progress. *** Addendum: Jazz-minh Moore paintings on birch at Collectively Grasp.
