Anthony Meier Fine Arts: Tony Feher. Comment by AB: Well, this one's an easy dong pull for the cynics, the centerpiece of Tony Feher's show consisting of a large tabletop littered with litter, described by the explanatory as refuse "culled over many years from Feher's everyday wanderings, in essence creating a quasi-autobiographical portrait of the artist's life. The materials have been carefully edited, combed over, added to, subtracted from, reconfigured." Many years, huh? Carefully edited, huh? It all looks pretty fresh and random to me, which may or may not be the case, but I suppose the trick is you muffle your misgivings in order to revel in the punch line. The good news? It's under $125K. Plus Tucker Nichols is there, and that would seem to speak to the gravity of it all (the dude doesn't show up for just anything). Also on display are two uniform lines of bottles filled to various levels with colored water, and two compositions of flattened boxes fully coated with glitter. You might call Feher's art "High Ordinary." It is what it is, there's no fancy footwork, and he makes no apologies. Bottom line? I like it. The story of Tony Feher's life - $110K. Art. Tony Feher. Comment by AB: Some of what we have here is art by Madeline Behrens-Brigham, but more of it is a political rally for Ross Mirkarimi and the issues he supports. Blend in the elder activist attitudes of AgeSong and concern for the environment, and you end up with a progressively gratifying mix. Art by Madeline Behrens-Brigham (I think). Comment by AB: Brian McDonald's paintings are kinda like Basquiat for the masses... or maybe Basquiat after rehab. Y'all know it has to happen sooner or later. And hey... it's OK. We all need a little Basquiat in our lives, don't you think? Paintings by Brian McDonald. Art. Art. Art. *** McCaig Welles and Rosenthal Gallery: Elizabeth Mooney - New Paintings and Sculptures. Comment by AB: Headlining this one is a binocular-style kaleidoscope made outta road cones. I dare you to look through it for more than 30 seconds straight. The bulk of the show is clean stencilesque acrylic on wood panel abstracts, plus several sculptures. Paintings by Elizabeth Mooney. Art. Kinetic kaleidoscope art. What you see when you look through the kinetic kaleidoscope. Art. *** Mission 17 Gallery: Cheryl Meeker - Depleted Selves. Comment by AB: According to the disquisition, the show's got something to do with depleted uranium, as I attempt to hack my way through the vernacular, but am more or less rendered clueless on that count. I'll tell you one thing though-- Cheryl Meeker's got an uncommon perspective on portrait photography. Photography by Cheryl Meeker. Photos. Photographs. Now here's a word you don't see everyday-- gingerly. Art. Art (Kate Nichols painting on the left - still sorta like it). *** |
