Jack Fischer Gallery: Lauren DiCioccio, Alizah Lelah. Comment by AB: Lauren DiCioccio and Alizah Lelah stitch up a show for Jack Fischer Gallery, Lelah manifesting the discipline with contemplative portraits and figural works for display on walls, while DiCioccio trends lighthearted with sewn works ranging from actual-size old fashioned Kodak-style slides to note pads and faux plastic "Thank You" shopping bags like you get at the corner store (she also shows several festive "dot work" interpretations of printed pages on what looks like translucent mylar). Artists/writers: Victor Martinez, Peter Plate, Michelle Tea, Gregory Halpern, Whitney Hubbs, Sean McFarland. Comment by AB: Interesting meld of photography and literature "contrasts the distinctive fiction of three local authors with the photography of three local artists"-- photos accompanied by text, all about good old Ess Eff. Purchase options include a book, limited to 100 copies, containing complete short stories by the three authors and illustrated with select images from the show-- each copy numbered and signed by all six participants. According the the gallery, this promises to become a "sought-after collector's item." I'm inclined to vouch for that-- especially if one or more of the six go on to have long and celebrated careers. Comment by AB: Curious and well-executed cut paper collage works, occasionally also woven, with dimensional aspects, by Jen Merrill kind of mimic old fashioned layered medical diagrams. Her ingredients also include styrene and linen thread, each component piece uniformly coated with acrylic paint. Art. Art closer - sorta like it. Art. Outer. ... Fabric8: Landmark Show. Artists: Brett Amory, Buzz Parker, C. Lee Sobieski, Dave Warnke, Dre Sibayan, Ezra Li Eismont, Ganyan, Gem, Grant Gilliland, Phoneticontrol, Reuben Rude, Rob Reger, Romanowski, Sirron Norris, Ursula Young. Comment by AB: Fabric8 is one of those little known beneath-the-radar kinda venues, perhaps not technically a gallery, but then again they gotta lotta art. In fact, that art tends to be pretty good small format works by pretty good artists at surprisingly affordable prices. No, I'm not kidding. Don't believe me? Check it out. A drive-by (or bike-by) would be eminently recommended. Art. Art. Art closer. Art closer. See? I told you there's a lotta art. ... Root Division: Landmark Show. Review and images by Libby Nicholaou: Group exhibition featuring 16 artists representing 13 different ethnic backgrounds. Ê ÊThe artists' works relate to each other, collectively enhancing the strength of the show. ÊIn particular, I like the room set up with a video projected on a wall with a long 70s style couch in front of it-- definitely a great addition. ÊAnother piece that stands out is a divider, constructed out of two large clear plastic sheets sandwiching little sticks withÊplants names written one them, and arrangedÊin a grid. Behind the divider is a mulched corridor, well lit with a table at the end. Ê The layers and interactive elements of this piece create a space of its own reminding one of theÊcoexistenceÊof life & death. ÊOverall, the most impressive show I've seen at Root Division in a while. Art. Art. Art. ... Million Fishes Gallery: Alex Potts - Resonance, A Sound Installation. Review by Libby Nicholaou: Visiting artist, Alex Potts' installation of hanging gourds emitsÊand records a mixture of ambient sounds from past environments and the current space, creating an organic earthy environment. Playing on the concept ofÊlife'sÊenergy existing in many forms and mirroring each other, Potts' gourds act as portals connecting similar spaces through sound. ÊVisually the gourds resemble horns and other musical instruments, easily imagined to be under water in natural suspension. ÊIt's beautiful and magical. Comment by AB: A rather remarkable interactive sound installation by Alex Potts consists of 100 or so hollowed out and polished gourds, each fitted with speakers and hung from the ceilings and alcoves. I can't really explain it much better than that, but would highly advise that if you find the concept even modestly appealing, you experience it firsthand. You won't be disappointed. In fact, I'm gonna lay a rare mid-month Pick on this baby. Interactive installation art by Alex Potts. Interactive installation art. Alex Potts - interactive installation art. Queen's Nails Annex: Golf Students Driving Presents Romanticized Disappointment. Artists: Tom Borden, Miles Conrad, Eric Gibbons, Andrew Kjera, Susan Martin, Sonja Meller, Jackson Patterson, Elizabeth Pedinotti. Curated by Brian Storts. Co-Curated by Sarah McMenimen. Comment by AB: Beer, boobs, grilled wieners on sticks, chest hair, hammers, nails, penile effigies, tree stumps, and games of skill (if you hammer a nail into a tree stump faster than a woman dressed like Daisy Duke, you win a grilled wiener on a stick-- see how it all ties together?). And that's just the front room. The center room features a rambling cardboard floor-to-ceiling installation and a several fold-out dioramas, while the back room is reserved for libations and fraternizing. Plus scattered about, there's sound and video and photographs and stuff. It's not an art show; it's an experience. Like it! Here we are. Action around the grill.
