Comment by AB: Los Angeles artist Dave Muller's oversized works on paper focus on six mediums used to record and preserve music-- cassette tapes, compact discs, the iPod, vinyl albums, reel-to-reel tape, and 8-track cassettes. His various groupings considered in combination with the distinct lack of sound get you thinking not only about what audio recordings represent, but also about who might own them and why.

Reaves Gallery: Matthew Frederick, Blair Bradshaw - Re:Invention.
Review by Jennifer Jeffrey: The Reaves Gallery divides their plenteous white walls between the two artists, Blair Bradshaw and Matthew Fredrick. Bradshaw's work for this show is a significant departure from his usual oeuvre-- the pieces of his that I've seen previously are rendered in bright primary colors, featuring iconic images mixed with bold, blocky type, whereas this work is altogether different. Composed of found objects ranging from a broken racquet to a jelly jar, textured brocade fabrics, spiky wood chips and other materials, the pieces invite contemplation and reflection.
I find Matthew Fredrick's work to be quintessentially Californian. Each piece feels so rooted in California that looking at them conjures up (for me) sunsets in Big Sur and the smell of eucalyptus trees. His trees feel like puzzle pieces with their rounded edges, and his mountains curve playfully against the sky. Fredrick often adds a slash of bright color at the top or bottom of the canvas-- chartreuse or bright fuchsia-- and forms loopy squiggles in the paint that impart a sense of joyful expression.

Ping Pong Gallery: The Beast In Me.

Review by Jessica Whiteside: On the hottest day of the year I venture out to Dogpatch for my first ever visit to the Ping Pong Gallery. Low and behold, a diamond in the rough. Actually, the neighborhood is really nice too, and now the new T-Line goes right to it.
The gallery is the perfect size and has beautiful large windows facing the street, and inside, the show 'The Beast in Me' is a group affair featuring a nice combination of works ranging from video installation pieces to sculture and paintings. The music that goes with Paul Clipson's video piece permeates through the space giving a sort of spooky, yet oddly soothing feel to the whole show. My favorite works have to be the text box installation pieces set up in one corner that spell out the words, 'Maybe, Perhaps, Almost.' The technical and conceptual excellence in the works make a trek out to the gallery well worth it.

Queen's Nails Annex: Frank Ebert & Matthew Hughes Boyko - Society of the Pseudo-Spectacle.
Comment by AB: This one's kind of about the excess we encounter everywhere we turn, in tonight's case, epitomized by the over-the-top spectacle of Rock & Roll. Frank Ebert paints and draws the profligacy up while Matt Boyko exemplifies it via video, in both cases elevating the essence of the idiom to the realm of high ludicrousness.

Silverman Gallery: Tammy Rae Carland - An Archive of Feelings.
Review by Libby Nicholaou: Tammy Rae Carland's photographs document memorable objects left from her mother and other people she's known in her life, here arranged similarly to what you might find at an estate sale, except against stark white backgrounds. The exhibit takes inventory of Tammy's life experiences with her mother and friends, sharing through these photographs various material objects that arouse various emotions within her. They remind us that experiences themselves create the memories, while objects-- whether complex or simple-- related to those experiences, incite or enable those memories.

Review and images by Jennifer Jeffrey: The city is a hot steamy oven but that doesn't deter the crowd from the opening of the "Everyone In Together" group show. Beer flows freely into plastic cups, and people circulate from sidewalk to gallery and back, trying to cool down. The walls are crammed with the work of over 40 artists, including Andy Kehoe, Kendra Binney, Steve Bartlett and Noefrin. It's a nice opportunity to see works by artists I haven't been exposed to before; I find myself scribbling down a few names of works that are particularly compelling. The gallery also shows a selection of limited edition prints from various artists who've exhibited here in the past; in my cursory flip-through, I find several prints by Caia Koopman that look intriguing. Perhaps on a cooler day...
