Sculpturesite Gallery: Mind Over Metal. Artists: Clement Meadmore, Bruce Beasley, Bret Price, Gerard Tsutakawa. Comment by AB: Good sound technically superior mainstream abstract sculpture, the kind corporate America loves-- especially when it's BIG. Sculpture (Gerard Tsutakawa). Gallery 16: Bill Berkson and Colter Jacobsen - Book Signing and Release for BILL. Comment by AB: Bill Berkson dusts off a 25 year-old manuscript consisting of "short sentences, paragraphs, and stray phrases" near the bottoms of 8 1/2 by 11 inch sheets of typing paper. He figures they need illustrations, so he rings up Colter Jacobsen, and the rest, as they say, is history. BILL by Bill Berkson and Colter Jacobsen. Bill Berkson - Colter Jacobsen. Comment by AB: Director Aileen Meehan tells me that the recently opened Collectively Grasp is an "environmental art gallery," meaning that the art on exhibit and for sale is created from environmentally friendly ingredients. Joel Hoyer's abstract topographical compsitions, according to the dossier, are composed of gesso, masi (a type of cloth made from tree bark), rabbit skin glue, and then gilded. Joel Hoyer - art. Comment by AB: Careening down Hyde St. in transit from one event to the next, I notice Hyde Street Gallery appears to be opening a show, so I pull over to check it out. And indeed they are-- about half a dozen abstract paintings and an assemblage by Josh Birch are on display. For much of the time I'm there, the five people in the intimate gallery space consist of me, the owner, the artist, the director, and the manager (if I recall correctly)-- the latter four talking exclusively among themselves. I gather up the gumption to introduce myself, and it's like pulling teeth to start up a conversation with any of them, and when they do deign to speak with me, it's really brief and with palpable disdain. Guess I'm not dressed right. Art by Josh Birch. Josh Birch - art. Art. Out front. ... Adobe Books Backroom Gallery: Scot Velardo - The Book Paintings. Comment by AB: Paintings on books by Scot Velardo, a compositionally intriguing blend, technically adept yet outsider in flavor, on display in zebra stripe decor. It's kind of a two-fer; you get a book and a painting, the back of the book interestingly fitted with picture wire so you can hang it on the wall (part of the art of it all). Velardo tells me his paintings are all done directly from photographs, usually his own, but sometimes taken by others. And affordable with prices ranging from $150-$800. Plus extra added bonus-- Scot Velardois a pleasure to speak with. Not your typical art show; check it out. Here we are. Art. Art. Scot Velardo - art (like it). It's a itsy (like it). Art. Stecyk III, Dan Murphy, Dmote, Jesse Geller, Josh Lazcano, KAWS, Madsaki, Phil Frost, PM Tenore, Stephen Powers. Review and photos by Mike Lin: The event heralds the release of a limited edition Barry McGee/RVCA/Cinelli bike frame. The fire marshall is on hand to make sure things don't get too chaotic on the inside, resulting in a two-hour wait to get in. The artwork mostly consists of bikes modified by artists, and a nice mini-installation by Barry McGee. Art. Art. Art (Josh Lazcano). Art (Barry McGee).
