PAULE ANGLIM - MUSEUM OF CRAFT AND FOLK ART PASQUALE IANNETTI - CALIFORNIA COLLEGE OF ARTS HOTEL DES ARTS - HOTEL NIKKO CONTEMPORARY JEWISH MUSEUM 05.10.07 Gallery Paule Anglim: Mildred Howard; Randy Hussong. Comment: Compelling show by Mildred Howard of mixed media works on paper, found object assemblage, sculpture, and more, imbued with symbolism and inference, heartfelt commentaries on past, present, and future states of affairs. Special added bonus-- you don't have to know all that much about what means what to appreciate the stark elemental impact of the work, but it helps if you do (plus kudos on the workmanship). Some artists distill it too far and compromise credibility; others bare the essence just right to drive the truth deeper-- like here. In the anteroom, Randy Hussong shows two and three-dimensional pieces themed on that icon of internal combustion, the race car. Art (Mildred Howard). Art (Mildred Howard). Art (Mildred Howard). Comment: Handmade Japanese paper, purest ingredients, centuries-old techniques from Haigyu, a small village deep in the mountains, produced under supervision of Isao Nakamura. Thick, rich, sumptuous, and exquisite-- some with embedded patterns. Psssst-- you can even feel it 'cuz it hangs right there out in the open. I never thought a sheet of handmade paper could double as a work of art. Live and learn. Papermaking art. Papermaking art. Papermaking art. Papermaking art. Comment: Limited edition graphics by this important surrealist artist, mostly posthumous works with facsimile signatures in relatively small edition sizes, priced low thousands; several lifetime imporessions, hand-signed, priced $20,000-$28,000. Either way, classic vintage imagery, good show, worth a look. Art. Art. Art.
