Satori Yoga Studio: Serenity. Artists: Julianne Sterling, Martha Sue Harris, Sheau Wha Mou Keefe, Carrissa Bowman, Mad Elephant Designs, Crystal Morey, Deborah Fredrick. Curated by Nicole Wintermyer. Comment by AB: Group show by artist members of the blog Arthead SF. It's pretty dark in there, so what you see is all I could get. Underscoring the yogic essence of the event, there's a woman all pretzelled up in the center of the yoga studio floor. Art. Art. Not sure whether these are part of the show or not. Erk. Art. Art. Art. Art. *** Pier 5 Law Offices: Art, Music, Poetry. Comment by AB: An intimate soiree organized by veteran North Beachster Philip Hackett featuring a reading by San Francisco Poet Laureate Jack Hirschman, art by Agnetta Falk, and music (sorry, but didn't get the name of the musicians). Pier 5 Law Offices, FYI, is headed up by legendary social justice attorney Tony Serra. Art by Agnetta Falk. Art. Memorabilia parlour. Tunes. Audience. Artists: Lisa Anne Auerbach, Andrea Bowers, Nao Bustamante, Tammy Rae Carland, Vaginal Davis, Eve Fowler with Math Bass, Deborah Grant, MK Guth, Taraneh Hemami, Miranda July and Shauna McGarry, LTTR, Leslie Labowitz and Suzanne Lacy, Aleksandra Mir, Laurel Nakadate, Shinique Smith, subRosa, SWOON and Tennessee Jane Watson, The Counterfeit Crochet Project organized by Stephanie Syjuco, The Toxic Titties, Jessica Tully, and RiotGrrl zines from the Independent Publishing Resource Center, Portland. Comment by AB: Primarily proactive politically-leaning installation works by a diverse and eminently involved selection of women artists, much of it collaborative and coalition-building in nature. You'll find plenty of references to feminist and activist movements of the past combined with assessments of the present, and looks to the future. There's lots of quality stand-alone works of art to enjoy as well (if you wanna take 'em out of their respective contexts, that is), but it's mainly an educational endeavor intended to make you think, reflect, and perhaps ultimately act, so bring your brain and be prepared to use it. Wanna help identify artists? Email me. Art. Impassioned art. Really impassioned art. Crocheted designer handbag art (Stephanie Syjuco - pick). Stephanie Syjuco - designer handbag art. Ground glass arranged on the ground art (like it). Macrame TV art. Macrame TV art from behind. Not sure - probably some kinda reductivist deal. Art. Thinly veiled suggestive art. Really long participatory braid-it-yourself pigtail art. Art. Art. Art. Knit fashion art (Lisa Anne Auerbach). Knit fashion art. Art. Detail of above image. This looks interesting. Wanna go in? OK. Labor intensive installation art. Labor intensive installation art. Art. Art. Installation art (Swoon & Tennessee Jane Watson). Tunes. Altitudinary. *** Gallery 1988: Stella Im Hultberg - Silent Spring. Review by Libby Nicholaou: Paintings and drawings on tea stained linen or canvas by Stella Im Hultberg. Stella attended school for graphic design. Later, in her spare time, she decided to create her own pieces of art. What's striking about her paintings are the hairstyles, all luscious and pushed up as if supported by currents of water. This sets her paintings apart from others in the same genre by giving her slight, melancholy, female figures an alluring strength. Paintings by Stella Im Hultberg. Art. Art. Art. Art. Artists: Ofra Fisher, Tom Franco, Christopher Hawkins, Josh Hershman, Olivia Kent, Joe Kowalczyk, Kjell Peterson, Peter St. Lawrence, Mike Steffen, Bruk Dunbar, Cindy Williamson, Tina Cheung, Ashleigh Holman. Comment by AB: Group show by artists from The Firehouse Collective Art Studios in South Berkeley, CA. It's that simple and no more complicated. Art. Art. Burning building art. Art. *** |
