  • MMGalleries: David Buckingham - How to Talk Dirty and Influence People; Eva and Franco Mattes - Portraits.

Comment by AB: According to accomplished metal sculptor David Buckingham, "I am once again overstepping the bounds of good taste, in public." Maybe he is and then again, maybe he isn't, because every quote on his sculpture is taken directly from a Hollywood movie. So technically, Hollywood overstepped the bounds of good taste first; Buckingham's art merely reaffirms it. What's nice about his sculpture, by the way, is that you can hang it on the wall. Sculpture is typically more challenging to sell than wall pieces, but if a sculpture is a wall piece, then it's a wash. Right? Er... never mind. Anyway, in the alcove, you'll enjoy digital Keane-esque big-eye portraits by Eva and Franco Mattes. Good show on both counts; go see.

Catharine Clark Gallery: Chester Arnold - The Road to Paradise; Winchester Redux by Jeremy Blake in the video room.

Comment by AB: Chester Arnold paints up a reality in need of repair, rife with litter, refuse, and junk, strewn around anbd blowing around, apparently with no one left to care. But every now and again, Arnold waxes upbeat and litterless, perhaps even leaning a tad romantic with small portraits of animals, a still life of canvases leaning against a studio wall, and a roll of fresh turf about to become part of a lawn. His large works are so complex, purposeful, and compelling that you can spend countless hours visually wandering about their compositions, picking through the pieces, and simultaneously reflect on facets of the past while contemplating the future. But don't waste all your time reflecting and contemplating 'cuz then you'll miss the cute little 4 x 5 inchers (perfect for the curio cabinet) at $1600 each. Prices on the biggies range to $42K. Superior show.

White Walls Gallery: Mike Davis - Solo Flight.

Comment by AB: Can't afford a Bosch or a Breugel or (fill in the Old Master of your choice)? Or do you like antique paintings, but wish they were just a bit more twisty? Either way, Mike Davis has your number.
