Lo-Fi Customs Gallery: Pistons & Vinegar, Hot Rod Photos by Brian Pritchard. Comment: At first, I thought the show was a retrospective of hot rod photographs from the glory days of the 1950's and early 60's, having a distinct vintage feel, but they're all brand new. Photographer Brian Pritchard travels the West to photograph his favorite subjects-- hot rods and those who love them. A hot rodder himself, his black & white images capture the essence of the lifestyle, have a romance about them, and show a respect and a reverence for the artistic side of American car culture. Comment: ArtSF is a grassroots volunteer organization run by and for artists with a long term goal of purchasing and establishing a community art center catering to visual, performing, music, and fashion arts and artists. Volunteers can use the organization's facilities as well as show their art and perform at monthly events such as tonight's. Whether you're just starting out, are new to the community, or you enjoy the comaraderie of kindred souls, joining ArtSF is a great way meet people, get involved, exchange ideas, make connections, and show what you've got. Art. I like it, logistical issues and all. This one was interesting too. Art. Art. *** OnSix Gallery at Club Six: Alma. Artists: Marcus Barnhart, Date Farmers (Armando Lerma, Carlos Ramirez), Johann Gomez, Jet Martinez, Branca Nitzsche, Giovanny Hernan Ortega, Toxqui Perez, RIGO 23, Lamont Rencher, Albert Reyes, Spain Rodriguez, Josue Rojas, Jason Treas, Gustavo Venegas. Comment: Another noteworthy show for OnSix, this time featuring art by fourteen established and emerging Latino artists from the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Seattle, curated by Bay Guardian designer and staff photographer Lori Spears. Alma is Spanish for "Spirit," and there's no shortage of that here tonight. Highlights include vintage Screw Magazine covers by Spain Rodriguez, a group of extremely elaborate pen and ink drawings done by Jason Treas while in solitary confinement at Pelican Bay State Prison, photographs of Central Valley workers by Branca Nitzsche, rock poster silkscreens by Johann Gomez ($30 and $50), a wall of art by The Date Farmers ($80-$900), and more. I like OnSix. That simple. They're on the bold side of original, consistently engaging and challenging with unexpected selections. Art. Art (Spain Rodriguez). Art - Jason Treas. Artists: Mr. Glaubitz, Martha Rich, Joshua Gorchov, Chris Buzelli, Joshua Krause, and David Groff. Comment: Artists who create both commercial and fine art. The artists, represented by Jennifer Vaughn, hail from all over the place-- Tijuana, San Francisco, Rhode Island, Pasadena, and the Midwest. Varnish is one of several San Francisco galleries that infuse nightlife with art, offering a gourmet wine bar and an intimate balconied setting-- perfect for a quiet evening of cultured romance. Price range, $150-$3200, most under $600. Art. Art. Art. Co-owner Jen Rogers. Art. Art. Art. Art. Art. Altitudinary. *** |
