HAYES VALLEY MARKET - GERAS TOUSIGNANT - THE LAB FORT - CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF INTEGRAL STUDIES - EDO SALON BABYLON FALLING - ROZANOFF - ARTIST'S TELEVISION ACCESS 02.08.08 Hayes Valley Market, 580 Hayes Street, San Francisco, CA 94102: Ancient City - The Art of Urban Transformation. Artists: Ken Berman, Mitchell Confer, Vera Fainshtein, Terri Garland, Yong Han, Barbara Holmes, Kay Kang, Alexandre Koulouris, Grayson Malone, Liz Mamorsky, Alan Mazzetti, Yvonne Mouser, Daniel Newman, Scott Reilly, Charles Trapolin. Comment by AB: According to the briefing, the "Ancient City" concept has to do with the rapid transformation of San Francisco, preservation versus progress, and that kind of stuff, the art purportedly embodying said essences. I'm not really gleaning any of this by looking at the art, so I'm simply gonna christen it a group show, plain and simple, but a good group show. And a major turnout for the event-- especially at the wine table. Backlit art. Art. Art (like 'em). Art. Art. Art. Art (Mitchell Confer). Mitchell Confer - art. Art. Almost missed these (kinda like 'em). Art. Art. Doin' the wine table boogie. *** Geras Tousignant Gallery: Michael Knud Ross - Lost at Sea. Comment by AB; images c/o Marian Ferrara: Art by Michael Knud Ross complements a benefit for Oceana, an organization campaigning to protect and restore the world's oceans. Ross's art is perfect for the occasion, effectively portraying the drama of the high seas. What it is. Art. Michael Knud Ross - art. Art. Art. Artists: Marie Kolding Lund, Gudrun Hasle, Jacob Borges, Jesper Carlsen, Jens Axel Beck, Morten Kaer, Heidi Hove Pedersen; Martha Sue Harris - Interior Landscapes (in the front gallery). Comment by AB: Seven Copenhagen artists known as the Koh-i-noor Collective trundle their collaborative creative nature across the sea and over the mountains to good old SF (actually, they probably flew), their mission to mount an exhibit of work which is a reaction to work shown by San Francisco artists in Copenhagen last year. Hey-- that's what it says. Anyway, there's all manner shenanigans going on including a video visit to San Francisco consisting entirely of images purloined from the internet and narrated by artist Marie Kolding Lund's grandmother, a dude working a hand cranked knitting machine which produces an endless purposeless tube of yarn, and my favorite, Jesper Carlsen's adeptly engineered video of himself throwing a ball against a wall. He projects the video at one corner of the gallery in such a way as to create the illusion that he's actually standing in the gallery and throwing a ball against a wall. In the entrance space, Martha Sue Harris essays on the relationships of plants to animals via an installation of paintings, soft sculpture, and video. Art. Endless crank-knit yarn tube art. Comment by AB: Much of what happens in America happens in California first. In response to that, this group show investigates California as an idea rather than a place. There you have it. Art. Art. Memorial to soldiers lost in Iraq. Iraq War memorial detail (vials are free for the taking). Overview (note recycled wood surfboard mounted on rear wall). Comment by AB: Art by contemporary Australian Aboriginal women artists, the show curated by Virginia May, MFA, artist, and Aboriginal art collector. A number of the artists in the show have exhibited internationally. Sizeable selection of art we don't often get a chance to see. Art. Art. Art. Lecture by Virginia May. Comment by AB: This show's bona fide excellent from both contemporary and historical perspectives-- you got Black Panther icon and artist Emory Douglas right here signing copies of his new book, "Black Panther, The Revolutionary Art of Emory Douglas," a selection of new and vintage works by Douglas, and archived copies of "The Black Panther" newspaper lining the walls of the gallery, all with intense impactful subversive cover illustrations by Douglas (he couldn't be nicer, by the way).
