JOHN BERGGRUEN GALLERY:
CHRISTOPHER BROWN; RECENT PAINTINGS
OPENING 04.15.04

Comment: Large format oil paintings, arresting in their perspectives, colors, subject matters, and movement. I don't suppose there's too much else to be arresting about, is there? Brown's work proves that an accomplished artist can engage viewers with trains, cats, horses, bicycles, hoses, lawns, dogs, and similar mundanities. Not a hint of shock, gross-out, novelty, lewdness, incendiary, convoluted cerebral aerobatics, or other cheap trix. While engaged, viewers enjoy multiple excursions per painting including (1) a quick trip to a peculiar place from which (2) they get to watch the action, all the while (3) wondering what's happening, (4) who the characters are, (5) how the story plays out, and (6) where it will end. And there's no guarantee it'll end the same way it did the last time.
