San Francisco Art Openings: Ampersand Gallery

AMPERSAND INTERNATIONAL ARTS
TENUOUS; TANYA HASTINGS
THE SUSTAINED ILLUSION; SARAH SMITH
OPENING 02.13.04

Comment: After several confusing shows accompanied by impenetrable statements, this one hits the spot, actually two spots-- a comfy rustic installation by Sarah Smith, recalling the good old Victorian days when a live-work loft in San Francisco only cost a dime; and especially the Tanya Hastings paper cutouts. So here's what happened: I'm gettin' up close and personal with these cutouts, like nose-touching close, to see how well-made they are-- and they're really well-made-- when this white-bearded, thick-rimmed glasses, attitude dude grits in my ear, "You an artist?" I answer no, at which point he launches a lecture on me about how the visual impact of these cutouts is all about their display, and he's right-- it is. Together we conclude that they're well made and well hung (moratorium on the jokes please). I ask him if he's an artist, and he answers yes. I ask him, "If I know something about art, would I have heard of you?" And he tells me he's in the Museum of Modern Art. I ask, "The one in San Francisco?" And he says, "The one in New York." I tell him I don't get out much. He tells me Sidney Nolan told him something once. I exhaust my twenty questions. No name for the famous.

Artist/Artists: Sarah Smith, Tanya Hastings.
