SAN FRANCISCO ARTS COMMISSION - VIEW 155 GALLERY
THE TREE OUTSIDE - SARAH CAIN
OPENING 12.10.04

Comment: Sarah Cain attempts to connect the tree directly outside the gallery with the gallery interior. So she constructs a space viewable only from outside, looking in through the gallery's front window. She scatters the space with dead leaves, some of which are spray painted gold. A curved gold line is painted up and down the back wall. According to Cain, "Details pile upon each other letting the viewer fall in and out of the silence of the tree outside."

I didn't fall in or out of anything when I saw this, other than perhaps stupefaction as to how a governmental agency can possibly sanction such a navel gazing brain-taser of a show at the expense of its citizenry, the vast overwhelming majority of whom, myself included, it will at best befuddle. According to the San Francisco Arts Commission website, "Through its dynamic programs, the (SF Arts Commission Gallery) serves a broad audience of residents, tourists, students and educators, arts professionals and artists." I mega-beg to differ on this one.

Artist/Artists: Sarah Cain.
