Linc Art - San Francisco Art Openings

LINC ART
NILS NOVA AND GUY OVERFELT
OPENING 11.03.04

Comment: Guy Overfelt is the proud owner of a souped up 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, a la Smokey and the Bandit, which he has personally souped, two variant hoods of which are propped on display in Linc Art's front window. Car work, of course, including the act of souping, involves grease and red shop rags which, when combined, result in greasy red shop rags. So Overfelt takes these greasy rags, sanitizes and deodorizes them up (at least I think he does, because the gallery doesn't smell like a garage), stretches them over stretcher bars, hangs them side by side, and transforms them into art. Recycling never looked so good.

Nils Nova's art reflects "his obsession with television and its impact on the modern psyche"-- paintings of televisions, photographs of televisions, and televisions of televisions. His art does not make clear exactly what television's impact on the modern psyche is, but I will concede, based on the content of the show, that the obsession claim is justified. Additional Linc Art opening night festivities included a live performance by Hazy Loper, tunes by DeeJay Julio Morales, Red Stripe beer, cheeses, fresh grapes, an aimless freeloader, and a nice selection of spreadable crackers.
