Linc Real Art; San Francisco Art Openings

LINC REAL ART
PIP CULBERT; THE DERVISH / HABIB KHERADYAR; THE RIDE
OPENING 09.30.04

Comment: Pip Culbert takes clothing apart at the seams and arranges the component parts; most hang from the walls, one spins from the ceiling. Habib Kheradyar stretches fine mesh fabric over smooth wire frames, creating op-art effects, and, for a refreshing pause, throws in a video of a particularly grimy bicycle being ridden up a hill, peddled by himself, shot from a camera strapped to the bike's frame and pointing down (all you see are sprockets turning, occasional shadows, and road passing by underneath).

Linc is always worth a visit as artist/proprietor Charles Linder gets out a lot, sees more art than most, and shows stuff from other places, physically as well as cognitively, thereby offering a qualified alternative to the relatively localized fare on display at most SF galleries. And anyone who can explain filleted fabric hanging on a wall in art historical terms has got to be good. How that translates into money, I'm not sure, but Linder appears to be getting enough to eat, so I'm not worried. While at his establishment, don't miss the flourescent bulb impaling a series of cut-out plastic diswashing liquid containers (not currently available in stores). So what if your kid can make one in the basement? Can he make the documentation that goes with it?

Artist/Artists: Habib Kheradyar, Pip Culbert.
