Supervisor Matt Gonzalez - San Francisco Art Openings

SUPERVISOR MATT GONZALEZ; SAN FRANCISCO CITY HALL
BARRY MCGEE / JOSH LAZCANO
OPENING 12.03.04

Comment: Barry McGee (Twist) is a skilled draftsman, evidenced in particular by a small ballpoint-penned face in one of the mixed media pieces. His art is tight and polished, but even with his considerable success, he manages to keep it raw enough to satisfy the proletariat. No commercial seepage here.

Lazcano presents a line of TV monitors with unsettling footage of posturing Latino gangbangers, most surprisingly young. It's a culture you hear about, read about, and see on the news, mainly in the form of aftermath, but this video humanizes the participants. It's kids having fun, but different from the kind of fun I had growing up. I stood there and stared, wondering what, if anything, I could possibly do, or whether anyone even cares.

And those mischievous artists-- somebody spray-painted naughty words on the wall, probably when Matt wasn't looking. They used to do it to me too, back in the seventies when I taught school in inner city Cleveland.
