San Francisco Art Openings: Friday the Thirteenth West

FRIDAY THE THIRTEENTH WEST
RECENT PAINTINGS BY PHILIP BUSCEMI
OPENING 08.13.04

Comment: Seeing as Friday the Thirteenth West is on lower Potrero, and not Union Square, it receives a paucity of foot traffic. You know what that means, don't you? All these people with too much money and too few options end up buying stuff like Hermes ties, Prada bags, and posthumous Erte sculptures. They then return to their comfortable residences in attractive neighborhoods with their brand name acquisitions, feeling varying degrees of satisfaction regarding the attainment of varying degrees of fulfillment within their lives. You know what that means, don't you? Friday the Thirteenth West, a unique, non-commercial, idealistic, free-thinking, progressive, hippie throwback, world peace, artsy, quirky, full-to-the-brim, entertaining, friendly, welcoming gallery-- one of those only-in-San-Francisco places-- could use a few extra bucks to make ends meet. So they held a rent money party. They've got all kinds of fun stuff you can buy, most of it handmade by real artists. Or just slide a couple of bucks under the door.

News Flash: The owners have recently rediscovered a limited quantity of banned posters from the first "Gay Olympic Games," held in 1982. The organizers were forced by court order to change the name to the Gay Games due to trademark violations. At $75 each, these original serigraphs, in mint as-new condition, make instant affordable collectibles (regardless of your sexuality). Get 'em while they last.
