Comment by AB: In the front gallery, German artist Stephan Fritsch let's it rip with a range of whacks at complete spontaneity. I'm curious to see how he advances this jag. As for the inner sanctum, Los Angeles artist Roger Herman whips up a motley medley of sundry subjects and hangs 'em salon-style across a single wall.

Patricia Sweetow Gallery: Remembering - Works from the Estate of Dennis Leon; Charles Eckart.

Comment by AB: Lush green foresty drawings by Dennis Leon contrast sharply with his schrapnel-like bronze sculptures, while bridging the divide is a boulder-sized organic wood and bronze (I think) sculpture with mossy green accents, positioned in the center of the floor. In the side gallery, Charles Eckart's exhilarating abstracts effectively exemplify the drama of impasto.

Comment by AB: In As Yet Untitled, artists, photographers and writers pair up to convey their creative inclinations from cognitive as well as visual perspectives. Also on display are student works resulting from a collaboration between First Exposures and 826 Valencia.

Hang Art Gallery: Restructured.

Artists: David DeFelice, Peter Dimick, Anthony May, Nancy Spoelhof.

Review by Kathryn Arnold: A very nice group show; I arrive early to get a good look at the exhibition that holds primarily paintings. Immediate recognition of the urban imagery of Tony May's works brings me in-- masterful playing of flat shapes with the colors of the city. On another note, David DeFelice's paintings contain layers and figural movement in abstract manner that feel on the surface like Max Weber's paintings of of NYC. Peter Dimick's expressionist abstract compositions use elements such as heavy black contour lines to join and make visible his figural elements against an often vivid background. I see relationships between Dimick's paintings and those of some of the German Expressionists. Must sees are these small compositions of Nancy Spoelhof. True miniatures harken to Jacob Lawrence and Romare Bearden collages-- impressive how she can do so much with so little.

12 Gallagher Lane: The Works of Hunt Slonem.

Comment by AB: Widely exhibited New York artist Hunt Slonem's fanciful paintings utilize repetitive bird, plant and animal imagery. According to the program notes, Slonem is completely dedicated to his pet birds and spends the first two hours of every day caring for them. Then off he goes to paint. As for 12 Gallagher Lane, it's an impressive split-level exhibition space that's opened within the past year.
